Application of Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM7406

In rotomoulded agricultural pesticide and liquid fertiliser tanks, Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM7406 is charged as a 35-mesh ground powder with a nominal melt flow rate of 6.0 g/10 min (ISO 1133-1:2022) and a density of 0.940 g/cm³ (ISO 1183-1:2019). Formulation for an outdoor 150–500 L sprayer tank typically includes 2.0–4.0 wt% carbon black PE masterbatch with a melt flow index within ±2 g/10 min of the base resin, plus 0.15–0.40 wt% of a hindered phenolic/phosphite antioxidant masterbatch. The carbon black concentration measured by ISO 6964 should remain above 2.0% by weight for UV protection. A processing aid masterbatch based on a PE carrier may be added at 0.5–1.0 wt% to reduce pinhole formation around sharp threads, but fluoropolymer additives must be avoided where long-term adhesive bonding is planned.

Processing on a shuttle-type rotational moulding machine with a 2.5 m swing diameter uses an oven setpoint of 260–280°C and a biaxial rotation ratio between 4:1 and 6:1. The target peak internal air temperature of 190–205°C is reached after 18–26 min depending on wall thickness; exceeding 210°C accelerates oxidative degradation and increases carbonyl index, while dropping below 185°C leaves incomplete particle coalescence at the inner surface. Forced-air cooling at 6–10°C/min to 40°C reduces warpage, but demoulding above 70°C should be prevented to avoid sink marks around brass inserts.

Compliance under UN 1H1 for agricultural chemicals of Packing Groups II and III requires a hydraulic pressure test at 250 kPa for 10 min, a leakproofness test with air at 20 kPa, and a drop test from 1.2 m at -18°C. Environmental stress crack resistance is evaluated per ISO 22088-3 or ASTM D1693; F50 values above 500 h are a common acceptance criterion for this service. Finished parts include tractor-mounted sprayer tanks, induction hoppers, static nurse tanks, and chemical draw-down reservoirs; threaded outlets are formed by rotomoulded bosses that are post-drilled and sealed with EPDM gaskets.

What Certification Barriers Apply to Rotomoulded Potable Water Tanks?

Potable-water service is not automatically conferred by a base resin data sheet; part-specific approval is required under NSF/ANSI 61 for North America, EN 12873-1 for Europe, AS/NZS 4020 for Australia/New Zealand, or BS 6920 for the United Kingdom. Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM7406 must be evaluated in the final moulded article because extraction of taste and odour compounds, total organic carbon migration, and surface deposit formation depend on the rotomoulding thermal history and release agent choice. Use of polydimethylsiloxane internal release agents at 0.1–0.3 wt% can leave siloxane films that alter first-draw water quality; when potable certification is required, the mould release system is either eliminated or limited to food-grade approved chemistries.

The moulding process for a 500–1,000 L roof storage tank runs at a peak internal air temperature of 195–205°C. Slow cooling in still air at 4–6°C/min maximizes tie-molecule formation and environmental stress crack resistance, but increases cycle time to 45–60 min. The finished shell wall thickness is specified at 4–6 mm for vertical cylindrical tanks and 6–8 mm for shallow rectangular cisterns with baffles. Shrinkage allowance of 1.5–2.0% along the part axis is built into the mould.

Post-mould hydrostatic testing follows the manufacturer’s written procedure, often a 24 h full-water load at 23°C with no leakage or sidewall mid-point deformation exceeding 5 mm. End products include gravity-fed roof tanks, emergency water storage cells, and modular rainwater harvesting tanks. Threaded outlet bosses must be back-plated with stainless steel inserts; over-torquing above 20 N·m can initiate stress crazing in the boss root.

For marine dock floats, marker buoys, and aquaculture collars, polyethylene grades in the 0.938–0.942 g/cm³ density class absorb less than 0.01% water by weight after 24 h immersion (ISO 62:2008), but the rotomoulded outer shell must remain closed-cell to prevent internal saturation of the polyurethane foam filling. Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM7406 is processed at 6–10 mm wall thickness for collision-tolerant float bodies, with a two-shot moulding sequence in which the shell is moulded, cooled to 40°C, filled with two-part rigid polyurethane foam of density 35–50 kg/m³, and then the fill hole is sealed with a rotationally welded cap.

Formulation for UV-facing marine parts requires 3.0–4.5 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch containing hindered amine light stabilizers and 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black or equivalent pigment masterbatch. Where foam adhesion is critical, external release agents are omitted; mould surfaces are grit-blasted to Ra 0.8–1.6 µm to reject gloss and create micro-texture for anti-skid deck surfaces. Processing in a carousel machine with a 3.0 m swing and gas-fired oven at 270–290°C must maintain peak internal air temperature between 190°C and 200°C to prevent thermal collapse of the foam after encapsulation and to avoid warping the flat deck section.

Performance is verified under ISO 179-1 Charpy impact at -30°C, with unfilled shell specimens required to show no brittle fracture. Buoyancy certification follows class society rules for floating docks or IALA Recommendation E-101 for navigation buoys, but lot release is usually based on a 24 h water absorption test and a 0.5 bar pneumatic leak test. Finished products include modular dock floats, mooring buoys, fish-farm collars, and wave attenuator floats; threaded stainless steel eyes are installed with heli-coil inserts to prevent pull-out under 2–3 kN sustained load.

When Diesel Contact Replaces Aqueous Media in Off-Road Fuel Tanks

In agricultural tractors, construction equipment, and generator set base tanks, diesel immersion causes slow absorption of aliphatic hydrocarbons into the polyethylene matrix, producing volume swell and reducing flexural modulus. For MDPE rotomoulded shells of 4–8 mm wall thickness, the expected diesel swell is approximately 1.5–3.0% after 168 h at 40°C when tested according to ISO 1817; published data for this specific configuration is limited and should be generated by immersion testing on welded plaques before approving machining tolerances.

Compliance for off-road diesel tanks is driven by UN ECE R34 Annex 5 for plastic fuel tanks or by OEM material specifications issued by off-highway equipment manufacturers. The shell must pass a pressure test at 30–35 kPa for 1 min, a drop test from 1.2 m at -40°C, and a fire resistance test when fitted to machines above 6 kW. Formulation requires 0.20–0.40 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant and 0.10–0.20 wt% phosphite stabilizer to resist fuel autooxidation by-products. Carbon black loading is limited to 2.0–3.0 wt% to avoid reducing cold impact.

Processing for fuel tanks uses a rock-and-roll machine rather than a shuttle for elongated 100–300 L horizontal tanks. The mould rotates at a 6:1 ratio with an oven temperature of 255–275°C and a peak internal air temperature no higher than 200°C. Internal air is purged with nitrogen during cooling to reduce oxidative embrittlement on the inner wall. Post-mould tanks are annealed for 1 h at 80°C to relax moulded-in stress around filler neck bosses. End products include saddle tanks, hydraulic reservoir shells, and emergency generator day tanks; brass or steel inserts are not moulded in-place when long-term diesel contact is anticipated because thermal expansion mismatch promotes microcracking at the insert interface.

IBC Inner Bottle Moulding and Wall-Thickness Control

Intermediate bulk container inner bottles of 1,000–1,250 L require UN 31H1 approval when used for liquid dangerous goods. The rotomoulded RM7406 bottle is produced with a nominal wall thickness of 5–7 mm, with corner radii kept above 50 mm to avoid thin-out below 3.5 mm. A metallic cage or steel pallet provides structural support, so the polyethylene inner bottle primarily functions as a chemical barrier and flex-fatigue membrane. Compliance testing includes a bottom lift test, a top lift test, a stack test at 1.8 × rated load for 24 h, and a drop test from 1.9 m at -18°C for Packing Group II.

Formulation for IBC service includes 0.10–0.25 wt% antioxidant masterbatch and, for outdoor or cross-border storage, 2.0–4.0 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch. Internal release agents are not used in food-grade IBC bottles; external wax stearate at 0.05–0.10 wt% is acceptable to ease demoulding of deep ribs. The moulding process uses a shuttle machine with an oven setpoint of 265–285°C, a peak internal air temperature of 195–205°C, and a double rotation ratio of 4:1 primary to 1:2 secondary. Cooling with mist water at 8–12°C/min through the first 15 min shortens cycle time, but rapid quenching below 100°C can lock in residual stress at the four-way forklift pockets.

After demoulding, the bottle is leak-tested at 0.3 bar with air under water. Wall thickness is mapped at 12–16 points with an ultrasonic gauge; any point below 3.0 mm triggers rejection because environmental stress cracking under a stacked load of 1,800 kg can propagate from the outer skin. End products include composite IBCs for phosphoric acid, hydrogen peroxide below 50% concentration, and glycol-based heat transfer fluids. Hydrogen peroxide above 50% is not placed in PE IBCs without specific liner testing because oxidative attack raises the melt flow index within 30–60 days.

Below-Grade Structural Shells Demand Higher Weld Integrity.

Rotomoulded septic tanks, pump chambers, and underground utility vaults made from Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM7406 require the highest weld integrity because soil pressure and groundwater buoyancy impose long-term creep loads. The material is processed at wall thicknesses of 8–14 mm, with a two-layer charge to increase inner surface fusion; the first charge is ground powder 35-mesh, and the second charge may be a micro-pellet to reduce air pockets. A slow cool from 190°C to 60°C at 2–4°C/min is used to maximize interparticle diffusion and raise the notched Charpy impact at -20°C above 10 kJ/m² (ISO 179-1).

Structural design follows EN 12566-1 for septic tanks or ASTM D2990 for long-term creep modulus. Below-ground parts are often produced with 2.5–3.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch for UV resistance during storage before burial. No internal release agent is used because bitumen or polyurethane sealant adhesion is required around pipe penetrations. The mould clamping system must reduce side-shift to less than 0.5 mm at the parting line to prevent wall thinning at the midpoint rib. Production-scale shuttle machines with 4.0 m swing and independent cooling stations are used to maintain the slow cooling profile without occupying the oven.

Testing for finished below-ground tanks includes a 24 h hydrostatic load test at full burial depth equivalent, a joint tightness test at 0.5 bar, and a flexural creep test at 40°C for 1,000 h under 2 MPa outer fibre stress. Published data for this specific configuration is limited because soil-structure interaction depends on installation depth and backfill modulus. End products include single-chamber septic tanks up to 5,000 L, grease interceptors, pump chambers, and cable draw pits. In high-water-table zones, anti-flotation collars or concrete ballast slabs are required; the shell itself is not designed to resist more than 5 kPa of uplift without external restraint.
