Application of Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS

In automotive HVAC housing production, the dominant failure modes are post-mold dimensional drift and contact-induced odour. Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS is processed for these parts at a melt temperature of 230 °C to 250 °C and a mold temperature of 60 °C to 80 °C, with desiccant drying at 80 °C to 90 °C for 2 h to 4 h until residual moisture falls below 0.05 %. The screw is specified with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.5:1; a ring non-return valve is mandatory because melt backflow during holding pressure produces short shots in multi-cavity HVAC tools. Injection unit shot volume is kept between 40 % and 60 % of barrel capacity; residence times above 5 min in the plasticizing unit degrade the oxidative stabilizer package and cause brown streaks. Carbon black masterbatch loading is capped at 2 wt% because higher pigment agglomeration reduces weld line strength at the mounting ears. The main failure mode in moulding HVAC duct halves is warpage after assembly when the part is exposed to peel forces from foam gaskets and duct clips. To keep post-mold distortion within assembly tolerance, the tool is designed with uniform wall thickness of 2.2 mm to 2.8 mm, and gate placement avoids flow-induced orientation at the mounting eyes. Melt front velocity is maintained above 100 mm/s through long floor duct rib fields to avoid hesitation and flow lines. Fogging behaviour is evaluated under DIN 75201-B; VOC emissions are controlled against VDA 278 or OEM-specific chamber limits, making it necessary to avoid amine-based antistatic additives and low-purity processing aids. Heat deflection is measured according to ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.80 MPa, while tensile modulus is checked under ASTM D638-14 for incoming resin qualification. Lot-specific HDT and melt volume-flow rate data for this SKU should be confirmed against the supplier certificate before cutting tool steel. Production output comprises heater box halves, defroster nozzle assemblies, actuator mounting plates, and floor duct adapters.

Is paint adhesion on Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS limited by external mold release residues?

For painted interior trim programs using Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS, mould release selection is the primary variable. External silicone spray is eliminated from the production cell because silicone deposits lower the wetting envelope of solvent-borne adhesion promoters and produce fisheye defects. Internal release agent is capped at 0.2 wt%; higher loadings migrate to the surface within 24 h at 60 °C and suppress paint film crosslinking at the interface. The substrate surface is prepared by wiping with a 50:50 isopropanol/deionized water solution, followed by either flame treatment with a propane-air burner at a conveyor speed of 5 m/min to 8 m/min or low-pressure plasma at 0.8 kW to 1.2 kW. Surface energy is checked by dyne solution wetting per ASTM D2578-23; a level below 38 mN/m is rejected. The paint booth environment is held between 40 % and 60 % RH to avoid water blistering. A chlorinated polyolefin adhesion promoter or a solvent-borne two-component polyurethane primer is applied at 8 µm to 12 µm dry film thickness. Topcoat bake temperatures should not exceed 85 °C for unsupported spans above 80 mm to avoid heat distortion under the paint oven load. Adhesion is tested under ASTM D3359-23 cross-cut after 240 h water immersion at 40 °C per ISO 2812-2:2018; delamination beyond Class 5B is considered a process failure. End products include painted dashboard lower trim panels, center console side facias, speaker grille frames, and indoor appliance bezel inserts.

For portable battery-powered tool clamshells and charging dock housings, Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS is molded where the service environment involves incidental contact with mineral oil, cutting fluid mist, and skin perspiration. Unfilled ABS is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and esters; the material is therefore excluded from compressed air lines and continuous fuel contact. Pre-drying is performed at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h, and melt temperature is held at 235 °C to 245 °C to avoid thermal yellowing of the stabilizer package. Mould temperature is balanced at 50 °C to 70 °C; higher temperatures improve moulded-in stress relaxation but extend cycle time. Gate width is kept at least 1.5 × adjacent wall thickness; thinner gates induce high residual stress and cause stress cracks around the logo area. Residual stress is checked by annealing prototypes at 85 °C for 2 h and measuring twist or bow against a reference plane. Environmental stress-cracking resistance is assessed under ISO 22088-3:2006 method 3 using constant-strain jigs and a rapeseed oil/mineral oil mixture; parts should not show visible crazing after 72 h of exposure at 23 °C. Stearate-based internal lubricant is limited to 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt%; higher levels cause exudation and reduce adhesion of pad-printed labels. The production cell is specified with a clamping force of 2,000 kN to 3,000 kN for two-cavity housings, with a screw plastication capacity of at least 60 g/s to maintain melt homogeneity. End products include cordless screwdriver clamshell halves, battery charger bases, inspection lamp bodies, and portable diagnostic tool housings.

Electrical enclosure dimensional stability after 1,000 h of damp heat aging

When the declared flame rating does not need to exceed UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm, router housings, smart home gateway shells, and power adapter enclosures made from Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS are specified. The unfilled grade does not carry an inherent V-0 package; applications requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm must use a flame-retardant ABS or a PC/ABS blend. Dimensional stability after damp heat is evaluated according to IEC 60068-2-78:2012 at 85 °C and 85 % RH for 1,000 h, with dimensional change measured after conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 24 h per ISO 291:2008. Moulded-in stress is minimized by maintaining a uniform wall thickness of 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm, capping rib thickness at 0.6 × adjacent wall, and using radiused bosses with an outer-to-inner diameter ratio of 2:1. Mould vent depth is limited to 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm; blocked vents cause burn marks at end-of-fill and lower surface insulation resistance. Carbon black masterbatch or antistatic package, when required, is limited to 2 wt% because excessive antistat raises moisture uptake and lowers the comparative tracking index. The screw and barrel are purged with a low-molecular-weight ABS purging compound before colour changes; residual carbonized material in the barrel contributes to black specks in light grey enclosure surfaces. Regulatory documentation for electrical enclosures follows REACH Article 33 communication duties and RoHS recast Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II; processors must obtain the supplier's declaration for the specific SKU. Electrical panel consoles are checked for glow-wire ignition per IEC 60695-2-11; ball-pressure indentation is tested under IEC 60695-10-2. Final products include router base covers, smart meter front frames, PoE switch housings, and adapter shells.

High-gloss small appliance housings with warpage threshold below 1.0 mm per 300 mm

In high-gloss vacuum cleaner programs, Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS is used for surface quality on bodies, air purifier front bezels, and kitchen appliance control housings. The tool surface is polished to SPI A-2 or finer, and the mould temperature is set between 60 °C and 75 °C to prevent premature solidification of the outer layer. Filling is profiled with an initial injection speed of 80 mm/s to 120 mm/s, followed by a holding speed of 20 mm/s to 40 mm/s and a hold pressure of 60 MPa to 80 MPa. Gate-free aesthetic surfaces require sequential valve-gate control, with a maximum gate diameter of 1.2 mm to reduce gate blush. Colour concentrate loading is held at 1 wt% or below for white and high-chroma colours to limit gloss reduction below 5 gloss units. Gloss retention is measured with a 60° glossmeter per ISO 2813:2014, after annealing molded plaques at 80 °C for 1 h to relieve surface stress. A drop of more than 5 gloss units across the flow path indicates excessive cavity pressure loss or a cold mould edge. Warpage control for elongated vacuum cleaner housings is achieved by using cross-flow cooling channels with a temperature deviation of less than ±2 °C between supply and return; a warpage threshold of 1.0 mm per 300 mm is imposed for final assembly. Published datasheet values for this specific SKU are limited, so shrinkage and HDT data should be verified on a molded plaque before laying out the cavity insert. End products include vacuum cleaner canister halves, air purifier front panels, and small appliance bezel frames.

For solvent cement joining of injection molded drain-waste-vent (DWV) fittings, Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS must meet a different set of requirements. Pipe fittings such as sockets, 45° and 87.5° elbows, P-traps, and vent caps are injection molded at 210 °C to 240 °C, with a mould temperature of 40 °C to 60 °C. The melt is dried to below 0.05 % moisture; trapped volatiles create pinholes that later become leak paths under hydrostatic pressure. Elevating melt temperature above 250 °C causes yellowing and weakens solvent cement bond strength through butadiene phase degradation. Post-industrial regrind from the same SKU is limited to 10 % because higher ratios lower melt strength and create drop-impact failures at the socket bottom. Long-term hydrostatic strength testing is performed according to ISO 15493:2003 with water at 60 °C and 1.0 MPa hoop stress for 1,000 h, while the US market references ASTM D3965-21 for ABS DWV pipe and fittings. Dimensional accuracy is checked by ring gauge fitment; sink marks on sealing faces are not accepted because they compromise solvent cement film thickness. The processing cell uses a shut-off nozzle to prevent drool because stringing from the nozzle tip interferes with automatic take-out robots. Chemical exposure in service is limited to cold and hot water, dilute acids, and alkalis commonly found in domestic drainage; the grade is not specified for compressed air or fuel lines. End products are DWV sockets, bends, gully traps, and mechanical joint spigots.

When cycle time is the binding constraint, not the material melt temperature

When annual volume exceeds 2 million parts, high-volume consumer electronics covers such as smart home sensor tops, USB charger clamshells, and battery compartment lids are molded from Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS in multi-cavity tools. The material is dried at 85 °C for 2 h to 3 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of ≤ −35 °C. The melt is set to 245 °C to 255 °C; increased melt temperature reduces viscosity for long flow paths at wall thicknesses of 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm. The cavity filling phase uses an injection velocity of 180 mm/s to 300 mm/s, with a hold pressure of 70 MPa to 100 MPa and a cooling time of 8 s to 12 s. A hot sprue manifold with valve gates is preferred; cold runner systems produce regrind that raises the melt viscosity variation by more than 8 % when regrind exceeds 25 % of total charge weight. Shot weight variance across cavities is controlled within ±0.5 % through a balanced hot runner manifold; larger variance creates inconsistent pack pressure and warpage in snap-fit frames. Weld line strength is evaluated on a gate-to-gate knit tensile specimen per ISO 527-2:2012; unfilled ABS weld lines typically retain 60 % to 80 % of the unknit tensile strength, so gate locations are shifted to move knit lines away from snap-fit hooks. The following process target windows are used for first-article qualification across wall thickness gradients.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer grade assigned to the producer’s 3000 series. The numerical designation 3020 separates it from adjacent general-purpose, high-flow, and high-impact ABS products in the same portfolio. The suffix HS is a producer-specific modifier interpreted in some distributor records as indicating a high-stiffness or heat-stabilised balance, but the exact additive or molecular modification is not disclosed in all accessible datasheets. Because a complete grade-specific datasheet is not uniformly public, this page separates class-level ABS engineering values documented by ISO and ASTM methods from 3020HS-specific requirements. No generic ABS value should be substituted for a certified lot value on a production control plan.

The product should be specified on the bill of materials as Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS. The base resin class is ABS. The intended conversion route is injection moulding. No food-contact, medical, or flame-retardant classification is conferred by the base polymer class alone; each regulatory claim must be supported by a grade-specific producer declaration.

What Drying and Feed-System Parameters Govern Surface Finish Consistency?

Moisture content in ABS granules above 0.1 wt% becomes a surface-defect risk because absorbed water flashes during plastication and produces splay, silver streaking, or internal voiding. For 3020HS, whenever ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% or opened packaging has been exposed for more than 30 min, pre-drying is mandatory. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of -20 °C or lower is used at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h. Drying above 85 °C can yellow the styrene-acrylonitrile phase and reduce surface brightness. Hopper dryers are not equivalent to desiccant units in humid plant air because hopper dryers may not reliably reach dew points below -5 °C. On production lines, the dried granules are conveyed to the feed throat through closed vacuum loaders or nitrogen-purged lines where workshop humidity exceeds 65% RH.

Screw decompression after recovery is normally set between 3 mm and 5 mm. Decompression above 8 mm pulls air into the melt and can increase oxidation, while insufficient decompression allows nozzle drool during mould extraction. Feed-throat temperature is kept below 60 °C to prevent premature pellet bridging. A chilled feed throat is used when the moulding shop exceeds 35 °C or when regrind content increases the bulk density variation of the feed.

Karl Fischer titration is preferred over weight-loss ovens for moisture verification because surface moisture can be underestimated by oven methods. Batch-to-batch melt-flow variation of ±2 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 can shift filling time by approximately 5% in thin-wall tools. Process sheets are therefore re-established against each lot rather than copied from the previous campaign. For 3020HS, published data for this specific configuration is limited; the drying and feed settings must be verified against the producer’s technical datasheet for the supplied lot.

Regrind is used only after drying. For non-appearance parts, up to 20 wt% of clean 3020HS regrind can be considered, but the addition changes flow length, gloss, and notched impact retention. Higher regrind fractions are not recommended without a controlled mechanical-property study. Dust and fines below 2 mm in length should be removed from regrind because they can cause black specks and melt-pressure fluctuations.

Melt temperature selection uses an ISO 1133-1:2022 melt mass-flow rate check only as a lot-consistency tool, not as a processing setpoint. For the ABS class, melt temperature is standard between 220 °C and 250 °C. The lower boundary is set by poor homogenisation and high injection viscosity; the upper boundary is set by thermal degradation of the butadiene phase. Barrel profiles for a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D screw are commonly flat-to-reverse, with the feed zone at 180 °C to 210 °C, the compression zone at 210 °C to 230 °C, and the metering zone at 220 °C to 240 °C. The nozzle is held no more than 10 °C above the metering zone. In valve-gated hot-runner tools, a failed thermocouple that reads 2 °C low can raise the actual tip temperature above 260 °C; degradation appears as brown streaks or black specks in light-coloured parts. Hot-runner thermocouples are therefore calibrated against a contact probe at the start of each campaign, not solely against the control-system display.

Screw speed is set so that recovery time remains within 80% of cooling time. Screw rotation above 150 rpm can generate frictional heat and degrade the butadiene phase. Back pressure is normally 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa; higher back pressure improves melt uniformity but increases cycle time and melt temperature. Injection speed is set high enough to avoid premature freeze-off in thin walls, but excessively high shear through gates smaller than 1.0 mm can create jetting and flow marks. For unmodified ABS, fill speeds of 30 mm/s to 80 mm/s are usual across 2 mm to 3 mm wall sections; grade-specific viscosity data must be consulted before selecting a speed for 3020HS. Packing pressure is typically 50% to 80% of peak injection pressure. Hold time is established by gate-seal time on an instrumented press, not by a fixed value copied from another tool.

Mould temperature is maintained at 30 °C to 70 °C. The upper half of the range is used where high gloss or replicated surface texture is required, and the lower half is used to reduce cycle time for thick-section parts. A mould temperature below 20 °C should be avoided because it degrades weld-line strength. Clamping force is calculated from the projected area and a cavity pressure of 30 MPa to 50 MPa for medium-flow ABS. Tools with long flow paths require hold-pressure profiles determined by plotting part mass against hold time; the hold time is set just beyond the plateau where mass no longer increases.

The property table below is a class-level ABS reference envelope. It is not a certificate of analysis for 3020HS. Grade-specific values must be obtained from the producer’s controlled datasheet before final part design.

The use of class-level ranges for preliminary design is acceptable only when the final tool is cut after confirmation of 3020HS-specific release values. Mould shrinkage is especially significant because a difference of 0.2% across flow and transverse directions can move critical dimensions in a 150 mm part by 0.3 mm. If the producer datasheet is unavailable, a controlled shrinkage trial is required before steel is cut.

Where a regulatory claim is made for moulded parts, the component must be tested in the final thickness, colour, and surface state. A base-polymer class designation is not sufficient for food-contact, medical, or flame-rated applications. For 3020HS, the supplier’s recognition letter must identify Beijing Shousu ABS 3020HS by exact grade, colour, and manufacturing site if the application requires a UL 94 classification or a food-contact statement.

When a Heat-Resistant ABS Grade Becomes a Drop-In Substitute: Limitations That Must Be Tested

Substitution of 3020HS for a general-purpose ABS or a heat-resistant ABS requires evaluation of three factors: heat deflection temperature, notched impact at the lowest service temperature, and melt-flow length under the production tool’s gate geometry. A heat-resistant ABS grade with an ISO 75-2:2020 HDT/A above 100 °C is not automatically equivalent to a 3000-series grade because the α-methyl styrene or maleimide modification that raises HDT usually reduces melt flow and increases mould-in stress. Conversely, a high-flow ABS with MFR above 30 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 may fill thin-wall tools more easily but may lose impact in the weld-line region. For 3020HS, published data for this specific configuration is limited; replacement decisions therefore require a controlled moulding trial with the actual grade, not a side-by-side comparison of nominal datasheet values.

Compared with flame-retardant ABS grades, unfilled 3020HS should not be assumed to meet any UL 94 V-0 requirement. If flammability classification is required, the moulded article must be tested with the specified thickness and colour. The same applies to chemically resistant or plating-grade ABS products. A plating-grade ABS contains butadiene particle-size distributions and etch-optimised stabilisation that differ from general-purpose grades; 3020HS is not automatically suitable for electroplating unless the producer’s datasheet specifies adhesion performance after chromic acid etching.

On the basis of class-level ABS behaviour, 3020HS is directed toward injection-moulded housings, appliance components, automotive interior trim, and consumer goods where a balance of rigidity and impact is required. The grade is not a candidate for continuous contact with acetic acid, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, or chlorinated solvents. Environmental stress-cracking evaluation under ISO 22088-2:2006 is recommended for stressed parts exposed to cleaning agents or lubricant films. Processors should avoid melt blending with PVC or acetal residues because degradation products can contaminate the purge and reduce the effective processing window. When switching from a heat-stabilised ABS to 3020HS, the barrel and hot-runner system should be purged with a purging compound having a processing window that overlaps both materials.
