Application of Beijing Shousu ABS 3020FR

In the manufacture of miniature circuit breaker (MCB) bodies and residual current device (RCD) enclosure bases, Beijing Shousu ABS 3020FR is introduced into desiccant-dried feed systems that supply injection-moulding machines with clamp capacities from 800 kN to 1,600 kN and screw L/D ratios of 20:1 or 22:1. Predrying is executed in a desiccant dryer delivering a -35 °C dewpoint airstream at 82–85 °C for 3–4 h, reducing pellet moisture to below 0.05 wt% as measured by ISO 15512:2019 Method B. Residual moisture above 0.08 wt% produces gate-land splay, rib frothing, and localised hydrolysis of the flame-retardant package once melt temperature exceeds 210 °C. The barrel profile is established from rear to nozzle as 175–185 °C, 190–200 °C, 200–210 °C, and 205–220 °C, with air-shot melt temperature held between 205 °C and 225 °C. Mould temperature is controlled by a pressurised water thermolator at 45–60 °C, with turbulent flow maintained at 4.0 bar differential to stabilise gate freeze-off and minimise post-moulding warp in 1.5–2.5 mm nominal sidewall sections.

Published multi-lot data for Beijing Shousu ABS 3020FR specifically is limited; the processing envelope above is aligned with public processing guides for brominated flame-retardant ABS injection-moulding grades and must be bracketed with initial tooling trials. Fill is managed by switchover from velocity to pressure phase at 95–98% of volumetric fill, followed by holding pressure from 35 MPa to 50 MPa for 4–8 s. Cushion is retained at 3–6 mm to avoid dead-space degradation. Screw rotation is set between 50 min⁻¹ and 80 min⁻¹ with back pressure of 0.4–0.8 MPa. Total barrel residence time is kept below 5 min at melt temperature; at temperatures above 225 °C, residence time is reduced to below 2 min because the brominated-antimony flame-retardant system releases volatile antimony halide species that plate out on vent surfaces and accelerate mould corrosion. Multicavity tools with gate diameters below 0.8 mm or tunnel gates below 0.6 mm can generate 10–15 °C local shear heating, producing brown specks after 20 min of continuous cycling. Flame-retardant performance is assessed on moulded bars of 125 mm × 13 mm × 3.0 mm conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 48 h according to UL 94:2023. A V-0 classification requires first and second afterflame time per specimen not to exceed 10 s, aggregate afterflame time not to exceed 50 s across five specimens, and no cotton-ignition events. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 on finished distribution-board enclosures is commonly performed at 750 °C or 850 °C depending on export certification scheme; acceptance requires extinguishment within 2 s and no ignition of the specified wrapping tissue. The terminal components are 1P, 2P, and 3P MCB base bodies and DIN rail mounting feet with nominal wall thickness of 2.0–2.5 mm.

Why Does Warpage Appear in Thin-Wall USB Charger Housings After Device-Level Thermal Ageing?

For 20 W to 65 W portable USB charger shells, top and bottom housings are injection-moulded at nominal wall thicknesses from 1.4 mm to 1.8 mm, with wall-thickness variation held below 0.1 mm across the projected area. Non-uniform shrinkage driven by rib intersections, gate position, and differential cooling becomes visible as post-ageing warpage after the finished assembly is exposed to an internal device temperature of 70 °C for 500 h. Mould temperature is raised to 50–60 °C to reduce frozen-in orientation, and holding pressure is extended to 6–10 s with a 0.7 mm valve gate positioned near the thickest boss section to avoid jetting. Because flame-retardant ABS grades exhibit greater pack-pressure sensitivity than unfilled ABS, cavity-pressure decay is monitored with piezoelectric sensors; part weight drift exceeding 0.3 wt% triggers a hold-pressure correction. Dimensional stability is measured by ISO 294-4:2019 on plaques aged at 80 °C for 24 h, with warpage acceptance defined by the assembly gap between top and bottom shells remaining below 0.25 mm. Flame-retardant certification for ABS 3020FR is commonly reported at 3.0 mm; for housings below 2.0 mm nominal wall, a separate UL 94 evaluation at 1.5 mm or 1.6 mm is required before production release. The terminal product is a snap-fit USB charger enclosure where gate blush, sink, and weld-line depth are controlled to less than 0.02 mm visual depth on exposed surfaces.

High-gloss appliance control consoles for washing machines and dishwashers use ABS 3020FR to meet IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2.3 glow-wire requirements while retaining sufficient scratch resistance for touch-panel surrounds and knob recesses. Non-metallic external enclosure parts that can be touched by a standard test probe and are subject to internal ignition sources are tested with a glow wire according to IEC 60695-2-11:2021; the specified test temperature of 750 °C or 850 °C depends on appliance category and current load, with acceptance requiring no sustained ignition for more than 2 s and no ignition of the specified tissue paper. The moulded panel is produced with a cavity surface of SPI A2 finish and a draft angle of 1.5° on vertical side walls to avoid ejection drag marks. Melt temperature is held at 220 °C and injection velocity at 60 mm/s to reproduce the polished cavity texture; holding pressure is reduced in the final 2 s of pack to avoid gloss difference at gate regions. Flame-retardant additives can plate out on vent surfaces after 10,000 cycles, producing surface white bloom that cannot be removed by dry polishing; vents are therefore cleaned with a solvent wipe and steel brush every 8,000–10,000 cycles. The terminal component is a front console housing for a household appliance control board with a nominal wall of 2.2 mm and integrated display-window frame.

Terminal Block Housings Demand Controlled Boss Geometry and Short Screw Engagement

Terminal block housings for industrial control panels are produced as 12–24-cavity tools in which screw-seating bosses require a hole diameter of 0.8× screw outside diameter, an engagement depth of 2.5× screw diameter, and a boss outside diameter of 2× screw diameter to avoid hoop stress cracking. The material is subjected to tightening torque during terminal certification under IEC 60947-7-1:2019 and, for North American products, UL 1059; the moulded boss must withstand torque application without gross cracking at 1.5× rated tightening torque. Short screws below 8 mm engagement length increase clamp stress at the boss root; the use of an undercut or internal shoulder reduces stress concentration but creates a thin wall below 1.0 mm, which is not recommended for flame-retardant ABS because of char-layer interruption. Melt temperature is held at 210–220 °C, mould temperature at 50 °C, and fill time at 1.2–1.8 s to prevent early gate freeze in the boss area. Mechanical verification is performed by tensile testing of moulded weld specimens under ISO 527-2:2012; lot-specific tensile strength is used for screw-torque simulation rather than generic datasheet values. The terminal product is a 2.5 mm nominal wall terminal block housing with brass insert terminals and snap-mount features for DIN rail carriers.

In power strip and extension socket shells, the injection mould must balance flame-retardant char formation against cosmetic weld lines around socket apertures and cable entry ports. The gate is placed opposite the central earth-socket opening so that flow fronts meet at the rear edge rather than on the visible top surface; melt temperature is maintained at 215 °C, and mould temperature at 55 °C to allow knit-line merging without excessive gloss difference. Nominal wall thickness is 2.2 mm, with the rib-to-thickness ratio limited to 0.5 to prevent sink marks around screw bosses. Cosmetic weld-line depth is verified by scanning electron microscopy on microtomed sections and kept below 0.05 mm at the surface; deeper knit lines propagate fracture under impact loading according to ISO 179-1:2023 Charpy notched impact testing. Flame-retardant compliance is evaluated under UL 94:2023 on the finished shell at 3.0 mm and under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire ignition for export market schemes that require 750 °C or 850 °C. For relocatable power taps sold in North America, UL 1363 may apply to the assembled product; material acceptance does not imply end-product listing. The terminal component is a multi-outlet power strip shell with integrated socket dividers and cable strain-relief features.

Flame-Retardant ABS Replacement in Low-Voltage Industrial Control Frames and Relay Module Bases

Industrial relay module bases and PLC remote I/O frames are moulded at 1.8–2.5 mm wall thickness with integrated snap fits, vent slots, and board retention ribs. Comparative tracking index is evaluated under IEC 60112:2020 using solution A; brominated flame-retardant ABS grades of this class commonly return CTI values between 300 V and 350 V, which restricts creepage reduction under IEC 60664-1:2020 for pollution degree 2 or 3 layouts. Creepage and clearance distances must therefore be calculated from lot-specific CTI data and not from unfilled or halogen-free ABS values documented elsewhere. The operating boundary is limited to non-outdoor, non-arcing current-carrying components below 16 A and surface temperatures below 75 °C; sustained exposure above this threshold accelerates oxidative embrittlement of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase and reduces impact retention. Injection processing uses a two-plate mould with tunnel gates of 1.0 mm diameter and vent depth of 0.02 mm. Snap-fit deflection is verified by repeated engagement testing for 50 cycles; boss and hook dimensions are adjusted to keep bending strain below the yield strain reported by ISO 178:2019 lot-specific flexural tests. The terminal product is a DIN rail mounted octal relay module base with 2.0 mm nominal sidewall and 1.5 mm vented top surface.

When ABS 3020FR Is Processed Through Multi-Cavity Hot Runner Tools for Electrical Junction Boxes

Surface-mount electrical junction boxes of 86 mm × 86 mm plan dimension and 20 mm depth are converted from rigid PVC or unfilled ABS to ABS 3020FR to gain stiffness and flame-retardant performance; however, hot runner processing changes degradation exposure. The manifold temperature is maintained at 215–225 °C, and the hot runner is purged after any stoppage longer than 20 min. Material retained in a hot manifold above 240 °C darkens within 10 min due to decomposition of the brominated flame-retardant package; this produces inconsistent V-0 behaviour and surface streaking. Externally heated nozzles with independent tip temperature control are used, and internal heated-pin dead spots are excluded from tooling design. Venting is provided at 0.02 mm depth along the parting line at the four threaded boss posts and around the cable-entry knockouts. Mould temperature is held at 55–65 °C because the higher mould side of the window reduces post-crystallisation shrinkage and improves flatness across the 86 mm span. Flammability is evaluated on the finished box at 3.0 mm wall thickness under UL 94:2023; glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 is conducted on the mounted product at 750 °C for most domestic installation schemes. The terminal component is an 86 mm × 86 mm flush-mount junction box with four M4 brass-threaded boss inserts, cable-entry slots, and a snap-on front plate.

    More Introduction

Beijing Shousu ABS 3020FR is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding compound supplied in pellet form by Beijing Shousu Engineering Plastics Co., Ltd. The grade is positioned for electrical and electronic enclosure applications where a vertical burn classification is specified in the end-product fire-enclosure standard. The manufacturer’s datasheet lists a nominal melt volume-flow rate of 18–24 cm³/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg piston load under ISO 1133-1:2022, a density of 1.18–1.21 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019, and a vertical burn classification of UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm under IEC 60695-11-10. Flame-retardant package composition is generally not fully disclosed in public documentation; whether the grade uses a brominated antimony oxide system or a halogen-free phosphorus-nitrogen system should be confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, ash residue, and supplier declaration when end-use halogen restrictions apply. The values are typical ranges, not guaranteed lot minima, and must be checked against the batch certificate because additive lot variations can shift melt flow and burn time.

What limits the injection moulding window for ABS 3020FR?

Processing is bounded primarily by the degradation kinetics of the flame-retardant package. The recommended melt-temperature range at the nozzle is 180–230 °C; a hard ceiling of 235 °C applies when residence time is kept below 6 minutes. Barrel temperatures should be profiled from 170–190 °C in the rear zone to 200–230 °C in the front zone, with the nozzle set 5–10 °C below the front zone to prevent drool. Extended hold-up beyond 6 min at 230 °C can release acidic decomposition species, generate surface splay, and produce black specks. Because the flame-retardant additives increase melt viscosity at low shear, screw recovery should use a back pressure of 5–10 bar; excessive back pressure will raise melt temperature through shear heating and push the material into the degradation window. Screw speed should be held at 30–60 rpm on a general-purpose ABS screw with 20:1 to 25:1 L/D ratio and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. A non-return valve clearance of 0.02–0.05 mm is recommended to avoid short shots and melt leakage.

Capillary rheometry at 220 °C shows apparent viscosity of approximately 90–120 Pa·s at 1000 s-1 and 30–45 Pa·s at 5000 s-1. The material is shear-thinning with a power-law index of approximately 0.5–0.7 in the injection shear-rate window. These values are typical for flame-retardant ABS; they allow flow into wall sections as thin as 1.5 mm provided gate size and melt-front velocity are adequate. Process simulation should not rely solely on a single-point melt flow index because the flow-length dependence on shear rate is not linear. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so simulation packages require viscosity-curve verification on the actual batch.

Moisture control is non-negotiable. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h is required to reach a residual moisture level of ≤0.05%. The dryer dew point should be at or below -40 °C, and the desiccant bed should be regenerated at 120 °C. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time should be extended to 4 h because pellet surface moisture uptake increases. Undried material can exhibit silver streaks, surface blush, and inconsistent weld-line strength. A moisture analyser set to 160 °C is sufficient for spot checks.

Mould temperature affects surface appearance and flame-retardant migration. The recommended mould-temperature range is 40–80 °C. At the lower end of the range, gloss may be acceptable, but weld lines become visible and notch sensitivity increases. At 80 °C, weld-line strength improves and the mould deposit rate rises because flame-retardant migration to the steel surface is temperature-driven. For a 2.5 mm wall, cooling time is usually 12–18 s at a mould temperature of 60 °C; this should be validated with in-mould pressure sensors or short-shot studies. Vent depths of 0.02–0.04 mm on the parting line are necessary to prevent diesel-effect burn marks, but vent cleaning intervals may shorten from once per shift to every 4–6 h due to plate-out. Hot-runner systems should be externally heated, and dead spots should be eliminated to avoid stagnant melt that can degrade and intermittently contaminate shot weight.

Mechanical testing of dry-as-moulded specimens to ISO 527-2:2012 typically records tensile yield stress of 38–42 MPa at 50 mm/min, tensile elongation at yield of 2–3%, and tensile elongation at break of 5–15%. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C under ISO 180:2023 is generally 15–20 kJ/m², measured on ISO type 1A specimens. Flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019 is typically 2100–2300 MPa, and Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306:2022, Method B50, usually falls between 90 °C and 96 °C. These figures represent a deliberate trade-off: the flame-retardant package increases density by approximately 0.14–0.17 g/cm³ relative to general-purpose ABS, and reduces notched impact by 20–40%. Consequently, ABS 3020FR is not a substitute for high-impact ABS or PC/ABS in snap-fit load-bearing structures. For applications with repeated deflection or drop-load requirements, prototype testing under IEC 60068-2-27 mechanical shock or IEC 60068-2-6 vibration should be performed on the final enclosure geometry; published data for this specific configuration is limited.

The comparative ranges below are typical values for injection-moulded test plaques. They should not be read as batch guarantees.

    Flammability classifications and glow-wire performance

Under IEC 60695-11-10, vertical burn testing of ABS 3020FR at 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm yields a UL 94 V-0 classification. The standard requires individual specimen afterflame time of ≤10 s, total afterflame time for five specimens of ≤50 s, and no flaming drips that ignite cotton below the specimen. In batch qualification, afterflame times are frequently below 4 s, but moulded part performance can deviate due to flow-induced orientation, weld lines, and pigment effects. For glow-wire ignition resistance, material V-0 alone does not guarantee a pass in the end-product glow-wire test to IEC 60695-2-11 at 650 °C, 750 °C, or 850 °C because the test result depends on wall thickness, shape, internal metal parts, and flammability of adjacent materials. For appliance housings certified to IEC 60335-1, the relevant glow-wire severity should be determined from the product-level standard. Published oxygen index data for the grade under ISO 4589-2:2017 are not consistently listed in public datasheets; if oxygen index is critical, the moulded plaque should be tested in the final colour and thickness.

Thickness sensitivity is a known operational boundary. At wall thickness below 1.2 mm, vertical burn classification can shift, especially at edge gates, weld lines, and sharp corners. It is not acceptable to assume that a 1.5 mm UL Yellow Card rating transfers to a 0.8 mm connector body. The UL Yellow Card, where issued, lists the minimum recognised thickness and colour range; any custom masterbatch addition above 0.5% should trigger re-qualification of flammability.

AC/DC adapter and socket-body production commonly uses the grade on 120–250 t hydraulic or electric injection-moulding machines. The shot mass should not exceed 60–70% of rated barrel capacity so that residence time at melt temperature remains below the degradation threshold. Typical processing parameters include injection pressure of 600–1000 bar, holding pressure at 50–70% of peak injection pressure, and injection speed profile set to maintain a constant melt-front velocity of approximately 200–300 mm/s in the main flow path. The constant-melt-front technique reduces burn marks and jetting, and it improves weld-line strength. Weld lines at snap-fit roots and screw bosses are the main failure sites in production; gates should be positioned to push weld lines away from loaded features. The blue-white char generated during flame exposure is an intended consequence of the flame-retardant system and should not be interpreted as contamination or degradation. Regrind use at 20–30% is common, but regrind fraction above 30% can reduce tensile elongation and shift melt flow because the flame-retardant package is partially degraded in each heat history. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so moulders typically re-test UL 94 V-0 and tensile elongation when regrind ratio exceeds 20%.

When 3020FR replaces unmodified ABS in thin-wall charger housings

Substituting the grade for standard ABS in an existing charger housing tool is not a direct drop-in. The flame-retardant package raises melt elasticity and can alter jetting behaviour from pinpoint gates. Gates should be sized at least 0.8 mm in diameter and located away from thin ribs; fan gates or tab gates are preferred over pinpoint gates where frosting and melt fracture occur. Shrinkage behaviour is more anisotropic than in general-purpose ABS. Parallel-to-flow shrinkage is typically 0.4–0.6%, while perpendicular shrinkage is commonly 0.5–0.7%. The difference can create greater out-of-plane warpage in large flat surfaces. Packing pressure should be held until gate freeze; premature switchover to holding pressure can produce sink marks behind bosses and at screw bosses. For thin-wall sections below 1.0 mm, flow length is limited by melt viscosity and injection speed, not merely by the nominal melt flow index. The mould should be trialled with cavity pressure sensors to establish gate-sealing time; estimates based on general-purpose ABS are not transferable. If the housing has internal metal inserts, their thermal conductivity can quench the melt and produce early freeze-off; insert preheating to 60–80 °C may be necessary, though published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Difference from other FR grades is also relevant. Compared with an unfilled FR PC/ABS, ABS 3020FR processes at lower melt and mould temperatures and offers lower melt viscosity at low shear, but its notched impact and heat-deflection performance are lower. Compared with a halogen-free flame-retardant ABS, the smoke density and combustion gas corrosivity are formulation-dependent; the supplier declaration on halogen content is the controlling document. If smoke density and combustion-gas corrosivity are regulated, the grade’s halogen content must be explicitly confirmed; absence of a halogen-free declaration for a brominated system is a compliance risk.

Supplier documentation for ABS 3020FR should include a Restriction of Hazardous Substances statement under European Union Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863, a REACH SVHC communication under (EC) No 1907/2006, and a UL Yellow Card where end-product recognition is required. The flame-retardant package must not contain restricted polybrominated biphenyls or polybrominated diphenyl ethers; brominated flame retardants such as PBDE and PBB are prohibited under RoHS, and their presence would be a compliance failure. If a non-halogenated specification is required, the material’s halogen content should be confirmed by X-ray fluorescence or ion chromatography; a simple RoHS declaration is not sufficient. Storage should be in sealed bags at 15–30 °C and below 50% relative humidity; opened bags should be re-dried before moulding. The material should not be purged with PVC or acetal because mixed residues can liberate acid gases and corrode the barrel. Strongly alkaline processing aids should be avoided unless the supplier has confirmed compatibility; alkaline residues can interact with flame-retardant components and reduce thermal stability. Regrind levels should be controlled and documented because repeated heat histories shift melt flow and impact.

Colour concentrates, external lubricants, and flame-retardant synergist additions alter flammability and melt flow. Any additive addition above 0.5% should trigger re-qualification of UL 94 V-0 at the final wall thickness and end-use colour. For outdoor electrical enclosures, UV stabilisation may be required; the base flame-retardant ABS is not automatically UV-stable under ISO 4892-2:2013 exposure.
