Downstream conversion of Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L in automotive interior trim begins not with pellet blending but with moisture control at the dryer inlet: residual moisture above 0.05% before plastication drives surface splay, lower weld-line integrity, and an increase in subsequently measurable volatile organic compounds. The regulatory anchor for this application is a multi-standard stack: FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795:1989 for horizontal burn rate, VDA 278:2011 for thermodesorptive VOC and FOG fractions, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for SVHC traceability, and GB/T 30512-2014 for prohibited substances in automotive interior materials. In a production compound using this grade as the base resin, a representative addition profile is 97.0–98.5 wt% Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L, 1.0–2.0 wt% carbon black or colour masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% antioxidant package, and 0.3–0.8 wt% internal mould release. Injection moulding is performed on a reciprocating screw with L/D 20:1–22:1 and compression ratio 2.4:1–2.8:1; melt temperature is held at 230–250°C, the mould at 50–70°C, and hydraulic injection pressure in the range of 80–120 MPa. Components are typically run in clamp-force classes from 8,000–12,000 kN, with holding pressure maintained at 55–70 MPa for 6–10 s to suppress sink marks. Shot-to-shot melt cushion is kept at 3–5 mm; cushion loss beyond 0.5 mm across 500 cycles normally indicates check-ring wear and produces short shots at rib sections below 1.5 mm. Finished article categories include seat side garnish, glovebox outer frames, door lower trim, centre console carrier panels, and seat belt guide covers, provided the design excludes Class-A grained areas subject to direct airbag deployment paths.
Surface-gloss differential at weld lines, not bulk tensile strength, is the controlling rejection criterion for white and dark glossy front panels moulded from Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L. The applicable compliance set is IEC 60335-1:2020 for household electrical safety, UL 94 HB at 1.5–3.0 mm section thickness, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and GB 4706.1-2005 for the domestic market. The formulation ratio is pigment-dependent: for white panels, 2.0–4.0 wt% TiO₂-bearing masterbatch with 60–70 wt% TiO₂ loading is dispersed into 100 phr Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L, while dark panels use 0.5–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch; an additional 0.1–0.3 wt% UV absorber is required for white parts to prevent yellowing at service temperatures above 60°C. Moulding uses a sequential valve-gate hot runner and a cavity polished to SPI A-1 diamond finish; the melt temperature is set at 235–255°C, the mould temperature is held at 60–80°C, and injection speed is controlled at 80–120 mm/s to prevent jetting. Variotherm control with a 90–100°C heating phase during cavity filling followed by a 50°C cooling phase is used when the panel has painted-film backing or a wall thickness below 2.2 mm. Venting gaps at the parting line are limited to 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid flash while allowing gas evacuation at flow fronts converging more than 120 mm from the gate. Finished article types include washing-machine top covers, air-conditioner front panels, display bezels, and control-panel housings; the process window excludes hot runner drops directly opposite a visible surface because gate blush is not removable by downstream polish.
In flame-retardant enclosures for information technology equipment, the compounding line rather than the injection press determines the ceiling on UL 94 V-0 retention. With Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L as the base resin, a workable FR formulation is 82–85 wt% Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L, 12–16 wt% brominated flame retardant—typically brominated epoxy or DBDPE—and 3–4 wt% antimony trioxide synergist; 0.3–0.5 wt% polytetrafluoroethylene anti-dripping agent and 0.2–0.5 wt% antioxidant package are added to stabilize char formation and prevent screw-induced degradation. The standard stack for this application is IEC 62368-1:2023 / UL 62368-1, UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm nominal thickness, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and GB/T 26572-2011 for China RoHS labelling. Compounding is run on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 44:1 and a temperature profile from 170°C at the feed throat to 210°C at the die plate; screw speed is set between 400–600 rpm, and melt temperature is kept below 220°C to avoid premature release of brominated species. Injection moulding of the compounded pellet uses melt temperature 210–240°C, mould temperature 50–70°C, back pressure 0.3–0.8 MPa, and total residence time below 5 min to limit black specks and acid gas generation. The vertical burn margin must be re-verified at the finished wall thickness because antimony trioxide dispersion in any given lot can shift dripping behaviour enough to move a 1.5 mm coupon from V-0 to V-1. Finished article categories include external power adapter housings, power strip shells, circuit breaker covers, and server bezel frames; the practical colour range is biased toward black because light-grey TiO₂ additions reduce the UL 94 margin at thin-wall sections.
Sheet extrusion of Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L for hard-shell luggage converts the pellet into a thermoformable sheet in which the extent of frozen-in orientation controls both thermoform depth and corner thickness retention. Regulatory obligations are principally REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for the chemical content of the plastic shell, plus mechanical benchmark testing under ASTM D256-10 for notched Izod impact and ASTM D638-14 for tensile yield; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and lot qualification is normally agreed between sheet extruder and luggage manufacturer. A typical sheet formulation is 100 phr Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L, 2.0–5.0 wt% colour masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% processing aid, and 0.3–0.8 wt% UV stabilizer for dark and saturated colours. The sheet line uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 34:1 and melt pumping temperature 210–230°C; the melt is polished through a vertical polishing stack at 80–100°C to produce sheet stock from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. Plug-assisted thermoforming is performed at 150–180°C sheet surface temperature with a mould temperature of 45–60°C; the corner radii must be held above 3.0 mm because biaxial orientation at sharp corners produces stress whitening and impact delamination in service. Finished article types include carry-on hardshell cases, spinner luggage shells, and equipment transport cases; split cases with aluminium edge frames require a separate riveting boss design because the sheet shell thickness is insufficient for threaded insert retention.
Power tool housings moulded from Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L require a different set of compounding choices when the workpiece must survive drop impact at -10°C or below. The application is generally executed as a PC/ABS blend rather than a neat resin, because the addition of polycarbonate raises heat deflection and notch sensitivity tolerance. A production-viable blend ratio is 100 phr Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L to 35–45 phr polycarbonate, with 3–6 wt% MBS core-shell impact modifier or SAN-GMA compatibilizer and 0.2–0.5 wt% antioxidant package. The relevant compliance stack includes IEC 62841-1:2014 for hand-held motor-operated electric tools, UL 94 HB at the finished wall thickness, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Compounding occurs on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder at L/D 44:1 with melt temperature controlled at 240–270°C; injection moulding requires pre-drying at 90–100°C for 3–4 h to reduce residual moisture below 0.02%, followed by melt temperature 250–280°C and mould temperature 60–80°C. The moulding line uses clamp force in the 6,000–10,000 kN class, and the screw must avoid shear rates above 1,000 s⁻¹ to prevent PC chain scission at the check ring. Surface character is evaluated at 60° geometry under ISO 2813:2014; textured finishes are preferred because lower specular reflectance reduces visible hairlines after tool-to-tool contact. Finished article categories include drill housing halves, angle grinder handles, battery pack covers, and charger bases.

Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L is a pelletised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied for injection moulding and extrusion. The grade designation places it in the medium-flow segment of the producer’s ABS portfolio. The suffix L is conventionally associated with reduced surface gloss or a lubricant-modified additive package, although the manufacturer-signed datasheet is not widely reproduced in open industrial literature. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and the suffix should not be treated as a guaranteed property class without the lot certificate. The material is based on a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase with a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase; this structure provides a balance of rigidity, surface hardness, and notched impact resistance, but the exact rubber content and graft morphology are manufacturer-controlled variables that shift the final mechanical response.
The unfilled density of this resin category is expected to fall between 1.03 g/cm³ and 1.07 g/cm³ when measured according to ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt volume-flow rate determined at 220 °C under 10 kg in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022 commonly occupies the medium-flow band of 6 cm³/10 min to 15 cm³/10 min for unfilled ABS, consistent with the numerical suffix interpretation if the resin follows the conventional naming logic used in Chinese ABS grades. Tensile yield strength tested on injection-moulded specimens prepared per ISO 294-1:2017 and tested per ISO 527-2:2012 is typically 35 MPa to 48 MPa, with tensile elongation at yield between 2.5% and 3.5%. Flexural modulus measured according to ISO 178:2019 is commonly 1,800 MPa to 2,500 MPa. Notched Izod impact strength per ISO 180:2000/Amd 1:2006 ranges from 15 kJ/m² to 30 kJ/m² at 23 °C, with a significant reduction at sub-zero exposure. Vicat softening temperature under 50 N load per ISO 306:2022 is generally 90 °C to 105 °C, while deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa per ISO 75-2:2013 typically remains between 75 °C and 90 °C. These ranges are reference classifications for medium-flow extrusion and injection ABS, not lot-specific release values, and must not be substituted for the producer’s certificate of analysis in component design.
Under injection-moulding shear rates from 10² s⁻¹ to 10⁵ s⁻¹, unfilled medium-flow ABS exhibits pronounced pseudoplasticity. The apparent viscosity at 220 °C and 1,000 s⁻¹ may lie between 120 Pa·s and 180 Pa·s, while at 100 s⁻¹ it can rise to 400 Pa·s to 600 Pa·s. The power-law index in this shear-rate window is commonly 0.25 to 0.45. Gate design should locate the gate at the thickest section and avoid direct jetting into the cavity. Gate land length of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm is typical, with gate shear rate held below 100,000 s⁻¹ to minimise molecular orientation, gate blush, and surface defects. These laboratory reference ranges are not grade-specific guarantees, but they define the practical flow envelope for process simulation when the official Shousu viscosity curve is unavailable.
Desiccant drying is required before melt processing. Moisture content above 0.10 wt% at the feed throat can degrade the polybutadiene phase during plastication and produce silver streaking, weld-line weakness, and melt-pressure variation. Drying at 80 °C for 2 hours to 4 hours with a supply-air dew point of −40 °C is standard on production-scale drying hoppers. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, hopper residence time after drying is typically limited to 4 hours to avoid re-absorption beyond 0.08 wt%. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle is held between 210 °C and 240 °C. Barrel profiles are staged from 190 °C near the feed zone to 230 °C at the metering section. Mold surface temperature is set at 40 °C to 80 °C; the lower boundary shortens cooling time but increases frozen-in orientation, while the upper boundary improves knit-line strength and visual uniformity at the expense of cycle time.
Injection-moulding machines with screw diameter 25 mm to 50 mm and length-to-diameter ratio 20:1 to 24:1 are suitable for this grade in general-purpose production. Injection pressure may reach 70 MPa to 120 MPa in thin-wall applications, with hold pressure at 60% to 80% of peak injection pressure. Back pressure below 0.7 MPa is usual to limit screw wear and frictional heat. Screw recovery speed is maintained between 50 mm/s and 100 mm/s for consistent melt homogeneity. On hot-runner systems, manifold channels smaller than 4 mm can create stagnation zones, yellowing, or black specks if residence time at 230 °C exceeds 10 minutes. Interruptions longer than 5 minutes in automatic cycle mode may require a purge step before restarting, particularly if the nozzle heater has allowed the melt front to cool below 220 °C.
Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L is directed toward injection-moulded parts with wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm, including electronics housings, small appliance bodies, vacuum cleaner shells, toy components, furniture edge sections, and automotive interior trim. In a multi-cavity cold-runner tool, the medium-flow melt is processed at flow-length-to-thickness ratios below 150:1 to preserve balanced filling and avoid excessive pressure loss at gates smaller than 1.0 mm in diameter. For electrotechnical enclosures requiring flame-retardant classification, the grade must be certified against the applicable end-use standard and the relevant UL 94 listing at the specific part thickness; flame-retardant behaviour is not inferred from the base resin designation.
Where the material is used for low-gloss appearance parts, mould temperature uniformity across the core and cavity has greater influence than melt temperature for suppressing flow marks. Differential cooling in tools with local hot spots above 85 °C can generate visible gloss bands even when the global surface temperature remains within specification. On production lines with clamp force between 600 kN and 1,500 kN, short-shot defects are more frequent during start-up or after cycle interruptions because the medium-flow resin lacks the cavity-filling reserve of high-flow grades. Texture replication on satin-finished surfaces is generally acceptable when the cavity surface roughness lies between VDI 24 and VDI 30 and mould surface temperature is above 50 °C. These observations reflect the behaviour of medium-flow ABS on injection-moulding equipment and are not specific lot guarantees for Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L.
Compared with high-gloss general-purpose ABS, Beijing Shousu ABS 3009L may produce lower specular reflectance on flat surfaces and reduce fingerprint visibility in satin-finished housings if the L suffix denotes a low-gloss package. High-gloss grades are typically processed with highly polished tools and exhibit a different visual response dominated by rubber-particle size distribution and the additive package. The difference in surface appearance is not solely a function of base polymer composition; mould finish and replication are equally significant in production.
Against high-impact ABS with notched Izod impact above 30 kJ/m², the 3009L designation is expected to trade some impact reserve for higher stiffness and better dimensional reproducibility. Unfilled medium-flow grades typically display flexural modulus closer to 2,200 MPa to 2,500 MPa, whereas high-impact grades often fall below 1,900 MPa. In snap-fit assembly with sharp corners below 0.5 mm radius, the lower impact resin can fail after low-temperature exposure at −30 °C; standard notched values do not directly transfer to gate-area stress concentrations, and moulded-part testing is required.
Against ABS/PC blends, ABS 3009L offers lower melt viscosity and easier filling at similar melt temperatures, but lower heat-deflection performance. ABS/PC blends commonly exceed 100 °C Vicat softening, whereas unfilled ABS usually remains below 105 °C. For moderately warm environments such as instrument panels exposed to solar load, an ABS/PC grade may be preferred if the local skin temperature exceeds 85 °C. The unfilled ABS grade has lower density and is generally less sensitive to high-shear discolouration, but it has inferior resistance to hydrocarbon-based cleaning agents and to some plasticising PVC films. These distinctions are practical selection criteria when evaluating the 3009L designation against alternative materials for the same housing or trim component.
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins absorb water at rates below 0.7 wt% when immersed for 24 hours at 23 °C according to ISO 62:2008, so dimensional changes in humid service are moderate but not zero. Resistance to dilute acids and alkalis is acceptable within pH 3 to 11 for short contact; however, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and some chlorinated solvents stress-crack the material, particularly in moulded parts with residual surface stress above 10 MPa. Solvent-assisted welding of ABS 3009L using methyl ethyl ketone or acetone is feasible under ventilated conditions, but joint strength depends on the solvent evaporation rate and pre-cleaning method. Painting and bonding require surface preparation by corona, plasma, or adhesion-promoting primer; untreated low-gloss ABS surfaces may show lower paint adhesion than high-gloss grades because the texture increases geometric area but reduces mechanical interlock at the microscopic level.
Machining, ultrasonic welding, and vibration joining are possible. Ultrasonic welding is performed with energy-director geometry and amplitude typically 30 µm to 60 µm at frequency 20 kHz; higher amplitudes can overheat the butadiene-rich phase and produce weld-line porosity. Laser marking on light-coloured ABS 3009L may produce insufficient contrast unless a laser-sensitive pigment additive is present. Thermoforming from extruded sheet is feasible for sheet thickness 2 mm to 6 mm at sheet surface temperature 140 °C to 180 °C, but the rubber phase may crosslink or discolour if the sheet is held above 190 °C for longer than 10 minutes.
For regulatory compliance, the product must be verified against the relevant regional frameworks. A base ABS designation does not automatically imply food-contact approval under 21 CFR 177.1020 or European food-contact legislation. Similarly, RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006/EC compliance depends on lot-specific pigment and additive composition. Electrical applications requiring glow-wire or comparative tracking index certification must be evaluated on the finished moulded part, not on the resin pellet alone.
