Keep containers/bags closed to prevent contamination and moisture ingress. Avoid dust generation and static buildup during handling. Protect from prolonged UV exposure, maintain good housekeeping, use first-in, first-out stock rotation, and follow the supplier’s safety data sheet.
Shelf Life Shelf life: approximately 2 years from manufacture when stored unopened in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
Application of Asahi Kasei SUNFINE UHMWPE SH801

In wet-process lithium-ion separator manufacture, Asahi Kasei SUNFINE UHMWPE SH801 is suspended in a high-purity paraffinic process oil at a concentration determined by target gel-film porosity and the torque ceiling of the compounding line. The powder is first pre-dried in a dehumidified hopper at 80 °C for 4 h with dew point below -40 °C to prevent moisture-induced bubble formation in the gel tape. A co-rotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 48:1 to 52:1 generates a homogeneous oil-swollen gel; barrel temperatures are profiled from 160 °C to 240 °C to dissolve the polymer without inducing oxidative chain scission. The gel tape is cast onto a chilled roll at 20 °C to 50 °C. Solvent extraction with methylene chloride or n-hexane removes the paraffinic oil to a residual level below 1.0 wt%. The extracted film is stretched in the machine direction at ratios between 5:1 and 8:1, and transverse stretching is performed after a preheating stage at 90 °C to 130 °C. Beyond this draw window, fibrillation becomes irregular and pinhole density increases. Final separator thickness for high-energy cells is commonly specified between 7 μm and 20 μm; lighter films require tighter web-tension control. Tensile properties are measured according to ISO 527-3, porosity by ISO 15901-1, thickness uniformity by ASTM D374, and puncture strength under ASTM F1306. The high entanglement density of SH801 supports adequate melt strength during gel casting, but published data for SH801-specific pore-size distribution under different transverse stretching conditions is limited.

What Limits Gel-Spinning Stability When SH801 Replaces Lower-Molecular-Weight UHMWPE?

Solution homogeneity in the spinneret pack governs operability. In a gel-spinning line, SH801 is dissolved in decalin or a mixed white oil at 150 °C to 180 °C; the solution is filtered through a sintered metal medium with 20 μm absolute rating and extruded through capillary holes of 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm diameter. An air gap of 3 mm to 8 mm is maintained to reduce chain relaxation and free-surface necking. Because SH801 has high molecular weight, shear heating raises local temperature near the spinneret wall; extrusion pressure above 12 MPa may initiate filament surface melt fracture. Filtration pressure should be monitored continuously because a rapid increase above 3 MPa across the sintered metal filter indicates gel particle accumulation and requires back-flushing or filter replacement. After solvent removal, hot drawing at total draw ratios above 30:1 produces high-tenacity monofilaments, but tensile test results must be verified per ASTM D885 or ISO 2062. The attainable tenacity is not inferred solely from the resin grade; die swell, solution concentration, and draw rate interact with the solvent spectrum and quench conditions.

As a compression-moulded shape for food machinery wear rails, SH801 powder is consolidated in a hydraulic press with platens sized at 1200 mm × 2400 mm. The mould is loaded with powder, levelled, and heated under pressure 7 MPa to 200 °C; a soak of 1 h at 200 °C allows chain diffusion without oxidative degradation. Cooling under retained pressure to 60 °C prevents warpage and void formation. Sheet density after cooling is typically verified at 0.93 g/cm³ to 0.94 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1. For food-contact use, the converted sheet is tested under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU 10/2011, and GB 4806.7-2016; the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² applies to the finished article, not the resin alone.

Sintered Vent-Disc Pore Diameter and Powder Granulometry Dependence

Powder granulometry dictates the final capillary pressure curve in sintered vent discs used for pharmaceutical and water-treatment aeration. The powder is compacted in a heated mould at 170 °C to 200 °C without fully eliminating inter-particle voids. The mean flow pore diameter determined by ISO 15901-1 mercury porosimetry correlates with the volume-average particle size of the SH801 fraction; a broad or bimodal distribution produces a wide capillary pressure curve and a reduced bubble point measured per ISO 4003. Moulders using this grade should sieve the powder to a narrow cut, usually between 100 μm and 250 μm, to maintain a predictable permeability-to-bubble-point ratio. Batch-to-batch particle-size drift will shift the measured bubble point even when sintering temperature and hold time are unchanged. Post-sintering machining is limited because aggressive skiving can generate localized melt-smearing that closes surface pores.

When stock shapes are machined into orthopaedic components, the incoming SH801 powder is validated against ASTM F648-21 and ISO 5834-2:2019. The processor must verify consolidation density, oxidation index, and tensile yield strength because resin certification alone does not establish implant suitability. After machining, net-shape acetabular liners may be crosslinked by gamma irradiation at 50 kGy to 100 kGy followed by remelting below 150 °C to reduce free radicals; the resulting crosslink density and wear performance must be assessed by ISO 14242 hip simulator protocols. An oxidized surface layer of at least 0.5 mm should be removed before final machining to avoid inclusion of degraded material. Published data specific to SH801 in this configuration is limited; each converter must generate its own validation set under the intended sterilization and packaging conditions.

When SH801 Powder Is Converted by Ram Extrusion Into Chemical-Resistant Guide Rails

In ram extrusion, the powder is fed into a heated barrel maintained at 190 °C to 220 °C; a reciprocating ram compacts the powder and pushes it through a converging die. Because the material does not melt into a fluid state, die land temperature control within ±5 °C is necessary to prevent surface cracking at the profile exit. Excessive ram speed can create internal knit lines detectable as density discontinuities under ISO 1183-1; the limiting speed is machine-dependent and must be established for each die geometry. The resulting profiles are used where low friction and abrasion resistance are required in wet chemical handling equipment. Die swell and compaction ratio vary with incoming powder bulk density and particle shape; processors should monitor these inputs when changing SH801 lots because batch-to-batch variation in powder morphology can shift the axial pressure distribution in the barrel.
