Application of Asahi Kasei SUNFINE UHMWPE SH800

A wet-process separator line using SUNFINE UHMWPE SH800 as the membrane-forming polyolefin begins with a gravimetric blend of 20–30 wt% virgin powder and 70–80 wt% paraffinic white oil, with a hindered phenolic antioxidant added at 0.1–0.5 phr and dispersed by the twin-screw compounding extruder rather than by external mixing. The extruder is typically configured with a 48–60 L/D barrel and segmented screw elements that distribute shear without allowing melt temperature to exceed 240°C; the SH800 gel becomes pumpable only after the oil penetrates the particle boundaries, and premature ramping of screw speed can produce gel slugs with undissolved powder cores. Filtration through a 20–40 µm screen pack before the T-die removes residual particulates. The cast gel sheet, 600–1,200 µm thick, is quenched to 20–40°C on a polished chill roll; this cooling rate fixes the oil-rich domains that later become micropores. Extraction with a closed-loop solvent system removes the paraffinic oil to a residual level below 0.5 wt%, measured by gravimetric oven loss, because higher residuals depress the Gurley permeability and increase shutdown response lag. Biaxial orientation at 110–125°C is applied in simultaneous or sequential mode, with draw ratios between 5×5 and 7×7; edges are clipped to prevent necking. The terminal lithium-ion battery separator, typically 9–25 µm thick, is tested for tensile strength according to ASTM D882-18 and for air permeability with a Gurley densometer under TAPPI T460.

For returnable beverage conveyor chain guides, SH800 is ram-extruded rather than screw-extruded because the melt fracture and residence-time distribution of a screw machine destroy molecular orientation and create weld lines. The powder is fed into a vertical ram extruder with a barrel bore matched to the final cross-section; barrel and die wall temperatures are held at 190–210°C and 200–230°C respectively, while the ram pressure is maintained between 20–60 MPa depending on die geometry. Each ram stroke delivers a discrete plug that fuses at the die entry; if the stroke interval exceeds the residence time required for inter-particle diffusion, transverse micro-cracks appear at the product surface. A die land length of 20–30 times the part wall thickness is used to suppress post-extrusion swell, and the extrudate is drawn into a water bath at 15–25°C with a haul-off speed calibrated to keep drawdown below 5%. No plasticizer is used; reworked regrind from trimming is limited to 15 wt% of the feed to avoid lowering the dilute-solution viscosity number below the value specified in ISO 1628-3:2018. Terminal wear strips and chain guides are machined to length and comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 when used without adhesive in incidental food-contact zones.

Sintered Porous Aeration Disks and Filter Support Plates

Compression sintering of SH800 powder produces porous aeration disks for activated sludge basins when the compaction pressure is deliberately kept below the level required for full densification. The powder is cold-preformed in a steel mold at 3–10 MPa to create green compacts with inter-particle void volume, then transferred to a heated press at 190–210°C. Sintering is terminated before the entire cross-section becomes translucent; a residual white core indicates undissolved particle boundaries and leads to low burst strength. The mold pressure during sintering is held at 1–5 MPa to prevent complete collapse of the pore network. After cooling under pressure to below 60°C, disks are machined to final thickness and tested for bubble point per ASTM F316-03; pore size is process-controlled by selecting the powder sieve fraction rather than by adding a sacrificial porogen, which avoids leachable residues. Terminal filter support plates and fine-bubble diffusers are used in wastewater aeration, where the media must resist biological fouling and retain air permeability at submergence depths of 2–6 m. Tensile properties of molded reference plaques are verified per ASTM D638-14, and oxidative stability is evaluated by ASTM D3895-19 if the part is specified for continuous service above 90°C.

When Cryogenic Valve Seats Are Machined from Thick Compression-Molded SH800 Slabs

LNG transfer lines and cryogenic valve seats require a polymer that does not embrittle at −196°C; SH800 slabs are compression-molded for this purpose because ram-extruded profiles often retain orientation that relaxes during thermal cycling. The virgin powder is compacted into flat molds at 5–15 MPa and heated to 200–220°C for a hold time of 30–60 min per 25 mm of finished slab thickness; the pressure is then increased to 10–20 MPa during the cooling phase to compensate for crystallization shrinkage. Mold release agents based on silicone are avoided because they migrate into the slab surface and increase seal-face leakage. The slabs are annealed in a nitrogen-purged oven at 120–125°C for 4–6 h before machining to relieve molded-in stress; machining uses carbide-tipped tools with low feed rates and a coolant spray to prevent local heating above the melting point. Terminal valve seats and stem bushings are dimensionally inspected after thermal cycling between ambient and −196°C; published SH800-specific Charpy impact data at cryogenic temperature are limited, so acceptance testing follows ISO 179-1:2010 with test specimens taken from the same molded slab. The components are not intended for oxygen-enriched service unless specific ignition tests are performed.

Why Does Gel Spinning of SH800 Demand a Narrow Hot-Drawing Window?

High-tenacity UHMWPE fibers are produced by solution gel spinning, in which SH800 is dissolved in decalin or paraffin oil at a concentration of 3–10 wt% in a heated extruder at 150–180°C. The resulting gel filament is first quenched in a water bath at 5–15°C, then extracted to remove the solvent before multistage hot drawing. The draw temperature is raised stepwise from 110°C to 150°C; below 110°C, insufficient chain mobility generates fibrillation and filament breakage, while above 150°C, partial relaxation reduces the tensile modulus. A total draw ratio above 30:1 is required to produce fibers with tensile strength exceeding 1.5 GPa; if the spin line cannot stabilize the gel filament at the required draw, the process is switched to a lower-molecular-weight grade. The terminal fiber is used in cut-resistant gloves, mooring ropes, and ballistic composite panels, where compliance testing includes ASTM D7269 for yarn tensile strength and NATO STANAG 2920 or regional ballistic standards for armor panels. SH800-specific gel-spinning data remain limited; pilot trials are recommended before specifying the grade for a production line.

Paper Machine Dewatering Elements Are Molded from SH800 to Eliminate Lubricant Penetration

Suction box covers and foil blades in the wet end of a paper machine are exposed to continuous aqueous abrasion and oscillating vacuum loads; SH800 is compression-molded into rectangular blanks and CNC-machined to the required blade profile. The molding charge is leveled in a vented tool to avoid trapped air, pressed at 10–15 MPa, and sintered at 200–215°C until the core reaches the same temperature as the platen. The absence of mineral oil or silicone oil in the compound prevents migration into the paper sheet and complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for indirect food-contact use in papermaking. After cooling at 5–10 K/min to below 50°C, the blanks are planed and slotted; sharp-edged grooves are radiused to 0.5–1.0 mm to prevent crack initiation. Terminal dewatering elements operate at machine speeds up to 1,500 m/min and are specified by wear depth after 365 days of service rather than by tensile strength alone.
