Application of Anhui Newmate New Material ABS NMABS-301

For grained instrument panel trim, door panel inserts and seat side shields exposed to cabin heat load across a service interval of 10 years or more, NMABS-301 is preconditioned in a desiccant hopper at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h until residual moisture is below 0.1 wt%; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying is extended to 4 h and open post-drying hold time is limited to 15 min. On a hydraulic injection molding press with clamp force between 1,200 t and 1,800 t and a general-purpose screw of 20:1–25:1 L/D, the melt temperature is held at 230–250 °C, the rear barrel zone is set at 200–220 °C, and the tool surface is thermostatted at 40–80 °C. Back pressure is capped at 5–10 bar and screw rotation is limited to 50–80 min⁻¹ to prevent shear-induced yellowing during residence times above 5 min. In mold trial records, cushion position drift above 1.0 mm and screw recovery time below 1.5 s produced splay and flow-mark defects on grained surfaces, particularly on tools textured to 25 µm Ra or finer. Compliance for cabin interiors is assessed under FMVSS 302, UN ECE R118 Annex 6 and ISO 3795 for horizontal burn behavior, while mechanical conformance uses ISO 527-2:2012 tensile, ISO 178:2019 flexural and ISO 179-1:2023 Charpy impact. Formulation addition is restricted to 0.8–2.5 wt% ABS-carrier color masterbatch; in-plant regrind is held at 20 wt% maximum because higher addition rates depress notched impact strength and alter grain retention on textured mold surfaces. Terminal product categories include instrument cluster surrounds, center console side panels, A/B/C pillar covers, seat side shields and steering column shrouds.

How Does NMABS-301 Respond to Cold-Runner Molds in Small Kitchen Appliance Housings?

Polished cold-runner tooling for vacuum cleaner motor hoods requires gate freeze-offs and flow hesitation lines to be suppressed through a velocity profile that moves from 30 mm/s at the sprue gate to 120 mm/s across the main cavity. NMABS-301 is dried to ≤0.1 wt% moisture and molded at melt 220–245 °C with mold temperature 50–70 °C and clamp force 350–650 t. Electrical safety of the finished appliance is verified to IEC 60335-1:2020, and ignition resistance is assessed under UL 94 at 1.5–3.0 mm wall thickness; the base grade is not intended for glow-wire endpoints above 650 °C, which may require shields or a flame-retarded alternative. RoHS compliance is checked against Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, with cadmium limited to 0.01 wt% and lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE limited to 0.1 wt% each in homogeneous material. Formulation addition of 0.5–1.5 wt% internal release agent and 0.3–0.8 wt% color concentrate is typical; regrind is restricted to 25 wt% where high-gloss surface appearance is not the primary specification. Terminal product types are vacuum cleaner motor housings, portable blender frames, electric iron soleplate covers, kettle side panels and coffee machine side covers.

Falling-weight perforation resistance in extrusion-thermoformed hard-shell luggage is governed not by sheet thickness alone but by the ratio of twin-sheet wall gauge to cavity draw depth. NMABS-301 is extruded through a slot die into a vertical polishing stack with roll surface temperatures of 85–105 °C, producing sheet gauge 2.0–4.0 mm; cut-sheet thermoforming reheats the polymer to a surface temperature of 160–190 °C. Multiaxial penetration conformance is verified to ISO 6603-2 at −20 °C and 23 °C, Vicat softening is measured under ISO 306 method B50, and static sheet tensile is tested to ISO 527-2:2012. Formulation addition ratios for luggage-grade sheet are 1.0–2.0 wt% high-tint carrier masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% secondary antioxidant only when line stoppage keeps melt curtain temperature above 230 °C for more than 20 min; edge-trim regrind is maintained at 15–30 wt% in non-cosmetic core layers and excluded from high-gloss cap layers. Terminal converted products are carry-on hard-side shells, checked-luggage front panels, tool case bodies and protective transit cases.

When NMABS-301 Is Processed Through Chrome Electroplating Lines for Automotive Brightwork

In decorative chromium plating lines, the etch swell of the polybutadiene phase controls peel adhesion, and this response is altered by molding-induced surface orientation, regrind content, and release-agent chemistry. NMABS-301 intended for brightwork is molded at melt 230–250 °C, mold 45–65 °C, and fast injection with moderate pack to minimize surface skin orientation; silicone-containing mold release agents are excluded because local surface energy changes produce skip plating and blistering. Formulation addition of regrind is capped at 10–20 wt%, and only clean sprue/runner material from unplated production is re-introduced. The plating sequence includes ABS-compatible etching at 60–70 °C in a chromic acid-based bath, palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel or copper deposition, acid copper levelling, semibright and bright nickel, and final chromium deposition. Rectifier ripple is controlled below 5% to prevent nodular chromium deposition on show faces. Decorative coating conformance is evaluated to ISO 1456:2009 and ASTM B604, with thermal cycling adhesion tests conducted at −30 °C to 80 °C on test plaques; published data for the specific NMABS-301 formulation in chrome plating lines is limited, and first-article coupon validation is required before volume production. Terminal product categories include automotive radiator grille shells, door handle covers, trunk garnish, badging and sanitary ware trim.

Toy bodies and building blocks fabricated from NMABS-301 are injection molded at melt 210–230 °C and mold 40–60 °C after drying to ≤0.1 wt% moisture; color masterbatch addition is 0.5–2.0 wt%, metal migration is verified to EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, US mechanical and chemical requirements to ASTM F963-23, and terminal product categories are miniature vehicle bodies, doll furniture and construction block elements.

Non-FR Office Equipment Enclosure Processing Under IEC 62368-1

When a non-fire-retardant enclosure is specified for monitor stand shells, scanner covers or printer side panels, NMABS-301 is molded at melt 220–240 °C and tool 45–70 °C; product safety is assessed to IEC 62368-1:2023, with the finished part subjected to UL 94 HB classification at minimum 1.5 mm wall thickness. Formulation addition of color masterbatch is 0.5–1.5 wt%, regrind is limited to 20 wt%, and the terminal product range includes monitor bezels, printer side covers, scanner lids and laptop stand bodies.

Refrigerator interior panels produced from NMABS-301 begin as coextruded sheet in which a virgin food-contact cap layer is combined with a core layer containing controlled regrind. Sheet extrusion is conducted at melt 210–235 °C, polishing stack roll temperature 75–95 °C, and sheet gauge 1.5–3.0 mm; thermoforming follows at surface temperature 150–180 °C. Food-contact conformity is not automatically conferred by the base resin designation: for EU market articles, the finished component is evaluated under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I and II, with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² or 60 mg/kg; for US food-contact use, suitability is assessed under 21 CFR 181.32 for acrylonitrile copolymers and resins. Formulation addition for opaque door trays and crisper panels includes 2.0–4.0 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch, while regrind is held at 20–30 wt% only in the core layer and is excluded from the food-contact cap layer. Terminal product categories include refrigerator door trays, crisper panels, dairy compartment lids and freezer drawer front panels.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Anhui Newmate New Material supplies ABS NMABS-301 as an injection-moulding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin in pellet form. The product designation NMABS-301 is an internal grade code and does not by itself encode melt flow rate, rubber content, or thermal class. Published data for this specific configuration is limited in public industrial databases; therefore, the reference data in Table 1 are drawn from ISO 19069-2:2016 and ISO 2580-1:2003 classifications for unfilled general-purpose ABS. These bands are not substitutes for the manufacturer’s lot certificate but are intended to support preliminary tool design and material selection.

Typical application fields include thin-wall electronic enclosures, appliance fascias, and interior automotive components where a balance of processability and notch resistance is sought. Selection for a specific end-use should be confirmed by moulding trials under production thermal and shear conditions. In addition, colour concentrates or masterbatches must be evaluated for carrier resin compatibility with a styrenic matrix because incompatible carriers can reduce weld-line strength and alter gloss.

Material Specification Bands and Test Architecture

The reference bands below are compiled from published ISO 2580-1:2003 designatory data for general-purpose ABS and from ISO 19069-2:2016 test guidance. Where a lot-specific value is outside these ranges, the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis takes precedence. Conditioning was carried out at 23°C and 50% relative humidity unless the test method specifies otherwise.

These properties are sensitive to specimen thickness, gate orientation, and moulded-in stress. For comparative measurements, ISO 294-1:2017 defines injection-moulded specimen preparation; inconsistent cavity pressure, melt temperature, or cooling rate can introduce deviations larger than the differences between adjacent ABS grades. Moisture absorption in unpredried ABS pellets can reduce apparent melt viscosity but also creates surface defects such as splay and silver streaks. Tensile and density values may appear acceptable while weld-line strength is compromised. For ISO 527-2:2012 tensile specimens, cavity pressure traces should be recorded. Changes in peak cavity pressure of more than 10% between dry and undried regrind indicate an unstable feeding regime.

How Does NMABS-301 Compare With Extrusion, Flame-Retardant, and High-Heat ABS Grades?

The primary distinction for NMABS-301 lies in the general-purpose injection moulding window. Extrusion ABS grades typically present melt flow rates below 8 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg to support parison or profile melt strength; injection grades operate in the 10–30 g/10 min band. If NMABS-301 is confirmed within this band, its higher flow relative to extrusion grades supports shorter filling times and lower cavity pressures. Extrusion grades often have higher molecular weight and broader molecular weight distribution, causing lower melt flow and higher die swell. Injection grades are optimized for fast cycle times and thin-wall filling; therefore, NMABS-301 may be unsuitable for sheet extrusion or blow moulding.

Flame-retardant ABS compounds, whether brominated or halogen-free, generally trade impact strength and tensile elongation for compliance with a specified UL 94 V-0 or V-2 rating. Their melt processing windows are narrower and often require strict maximum barrel temperatures to avoid additive degradation. Flame-retardant grades can also require tool steel with higher corrosion resistance when halogenated systems release acid gases under extended residence times; this is not the intended condition for NMABS-301. High-heat ABS grades are formulated with α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers to raise Vicat softening temperature above 115°C, but the accompanying reduction in melt flow increases injection pressure and may require oil-heated moulds above 80°C. High-heat ABS may require melt temperatures up to 265°C, whereas general-purpose ABS should remain below 250°C to protect the butadiene phase. Compared with these specialty grades, a general-purpose unfilled ABS such as NMABS-301 is more likely to provide a wider screw-speed and temperature window at the expense of elevated heat resistance or flame retardancy.

When Thin-Wall Electronic Housings Require Balanced Melt Flow and Impact Retention

For enclosure wall sections in the 1.5–2.5 mm range, an unfilled ABS with a melt flow rate in the 15–25 g/10 min band can fill multi-cavity tools at moderate hydraulic pressure. Production experience with general-purpose ABS on screw diameters of 35–55 mm and L/D ratios of 20:1–24:1 indicates that melt temperature is commonly maintained at 230–250°C, with mould temperature controlled to 40–60°C to balance surface gloss and dimensional stability. A cavity pressure of 40–70 MPa at the gate is frequently sufficient for packing; excessively high hold pressure beyond 80 MPa can create overpacking, increase moulded-in stress, and worsen dimensional stability after annealing. Gate size should not be less than 50% of the wall thickness for uniform pack.

Injection speed should be profiled to avoid jetting; a short fill study followed by gate-seal time evaluation establishes the holding-pressure window. Weld-line strength in thin-wall ribs is influenced by dispersion of the butadiene rubber phase and by the selected FR-free formulation, if NMABS-301 is used without fillers. For snap-fit features, tensile strain at yield and Charpy notched impact at 23°C should be evaluated on moulded plaques rather than raw pellets. The use of hot-runner systems with manifold channel diameters of 5–8 mm is common for multi-cavity housings, but residence time of melt in the hot runner should be limited to 5 min at 240°C to avoid yellowing.

Pre-drying is required when moisture content exceeds 0.10 wt% because water vapour in the melt generates splay, silver streaks, and internal voids. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30°C or lower is preferred; setting the hopper at 80°C for 2–4 h is a common production target for unfilled ABS. Drying temperatures above 95°C or residence times beyond 8 h can cause pellet agglomeration and yellowing due to oxidation of the butadiene phase. Moisture analysis by Karl Fischer titration is preferred over weight-loss methods because ABS pellets may release moisture slowly and surface condensation can mask internal moisture. A target of 0.05 wt% or lower before moulding is a conservative specification for surface-critical parts. Use of hopper magnets and fine screens downstream of the dryer reduces contamination from tramp metal and fines that can cause black specks.

Material incompatibilities include ketone, ester, and chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents that induce environmental stress cracking in stressed ABS parts. Purging with rigid PVC compounds should be avoided because thermal decomposition of PVC can release hydrogen chloride and corrode screw surfaces. If moulding follows a polycarbonate or polyamide run, a thorough purging sequence with a styrenic purging compound is required to prevent delamination caused by incompatible melt residues. Batch-to-batch consistency controls for general-purpose ABS require tracking melt flow rate and Charpy impact on each lot. A moving range chart with control limits based on ±10% of the certified value for MFR and ±15% for Charpy impact is employed in many injection moulding facilities. Lot blends should not be attempted without prior homogeneity testing because the SAN matrix and rubber particle distribution may differ across production campaigns.

Addressing Brittle Failure in Low-Temperature Service Through Rubber Morphology Control

At sub-zero temperatures, the impact response of ABS is governed by the butadiene rubber phase: particle size distribution, grafting efficiency, and crosslink density control shear yielding and crazing in the SAN matrix. Charpy notched impact at −30°C is typically reduced to 7–12 kJ/m² in general-purpose grades, compared with 15–35 kJ/m² at 23°C. For applications subject to cold-impact loading, the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour should be mapped using ISO 179-1:2010 specimens cut from moulded plaques in both gate-parallel and gate-transverse orientations.

If NMABS-301 demonstrates unstable low-temperature impact, design changes such as radius enlargement at bosses, removal of sharp internal corners, and relocation of weld lines away from load-bearing regions are more effective than simple material substitution. High-impact ABS grades may provide higher low-temperature Charpy values, but their flexural modulus is lower and shrinkage may differ. Material substitution from a general-purpose grade to a high-impact grade therefore requires dimensional validation of the existing tool because cooling shrinkage and post-mould ageing can alter assembly clearances.

Compliance of an unfilled ABS grade is assessed against the following framework. Additional requirements such as food-contact status under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or specific automotive OEM standards should be requested from the manufacturer before approval.

Service temperature limitations are tied to the Vicat and HDT bands: continuous exposure under mechanical load should not exceed 60–80°C for unfilled ABS, and peak excursions above 95°C may cause distortion in parts under clamping forces. Outdoor use without UV stabilization leads to gloss loss, yellowing, and surface microcracking within 12–24 months under high-UV exposure; this limitation is common to unmodified ABS and should inform material selection for external bezels or unshielded exterior components.
