    Application of Akro-Plastic Precite® V PBT+ASA Precite® V GF 20 black (7736)

Why Does a 20 wt% Glass-Reinforced PBT/ASA Matrix Control Warp in Exterior Mirror Housing Shells?

Akro-Plastic Precite® V PBT+ASA Precite® V GF 20 black (7736) is specified in exterior mirror housing shells, base covers, and cowl vent grilles where the PBT domain contributes rapid crystallisation, low moisture regain, and dimensional stability, while the ASA domain suppresses UV surface crazing and improves colour retention under temperate and subtropical field exposure. In a production trial on a 1,500 kN hydraulic injection moulding machine with a 22:1 L/D plasticising unit, the compound was pre-dried at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer with a -40 °C dew point to reduce residual moisture below 0.02%; failure to hold this moisture limit produced hydrolysis and surface splay at the valve gate tips. The melt was maintained at 250–270 °C at the nozzle, the mould was held at 80–100 °C, and packing pressure on the cavity pressure transducer was set to 60–80 MPa for 8–12 s on 2.5 mm wall sections. Sequential valve-gated hot runners with pneumatically actuated pin movement reduced weld lines around the mirror boss and minimised gas entrapment at the lower shell rim; a 2.5 mm wall with a cold runner previously produced gate blush on textured show surfaces, so the tool was converted to a two-drop sequential valve gate with gate timing offset by 0.5 s to balance the weld line.

Compliance verification for exterior mirror assemblies references ISO 4892-2:2013 method A cycle 1 or SAE J2527 for xenon-arc exposure, with surface evaluation against OEM gloss and ΔE limits; flammability is checked according to FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795, and REACH plus RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU data are required for European vehicle material records. The resin feed is 100% as-supplied compound; no external carbon black masterbatch is added because black 7736 already contains the pigment dispersion. Clean sprues and runners from the same glass-reinforced material are limited to 15 wt% for non-visible inner ribs and 10 wt% for show surfaces, blended with virgin material to prevent glass-fibre accumulation at the flow front and silver streaking. Polyamide and polycarbonate regrind contamination must be prevented because PBT-PC transesterification and PA viscosity mismatch can shift crystallisation speed and produce delamination. Downstream manufacturing proceeds by direct injection moulding, not machining; the anisotropic glass-fibre orientation is cavity-dependent and must be verified on a 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaque according to ISO 294-4 when transferring the tool between machines with different screw diameters. Finished components include painted or class-A-textured mirror housing shells, mirror base covers, actuator covers, repeater lamp mounting pads, and cowl vent grilles.

In distributed photovoltaic systems, non-current-carrying outdoor inverter enclosures, combiner box base housings, and AC disconnect covers are moulded from the Precite® V PBT+ASA GF 20 black (7736) compound when the design must survive rain, high-humidity condensation, and direct ultraviolet exposure without secondary painting. The material is not an inherently flame-retardant compound and must not be considered an automatic substitute for a flame-retardant PC/ABS or PA66 in current-carrying compartments; published flammability data for this specific black 7736 formulation at the target enclosure wall thickness is limited, so the final-part glow-wire or flame classification has to be validated at the minimum wall section. Compliance assessment of the enclosure references IEC 62208 for empty enclosure verification, IEC 60529 for IP65 sealing, UL 746C f1 for outdoor weathering, IEC 60112 for comparative tracking index, and IEC 60695-2-11 where the finished appliance standard imposes a glow-wire temperature. The material is predried at 80–100 °C for 4–6 h to a residual moisture below 0.02% because the PBT phase hydrolyzes in the barrel above melt temperature; moisture levels above 0.03% produce mould deposit on the venting surfaces and loss of notched Charpy after demoulding.

On a 2,500 kN hydraulic moulding machine running 2.5–4.0 mm wall sections, fan gates and tab gates are used instead of pin gates to prevent jetting at the large flat cover surfaces. Venting inserts are placed at opposing weld lines because gas traps formed on a four-cavity tool during first article approval and caused burn marks near the lock bosses. The melt is held at 255–270 °C, the mould at 80–100 °C, and the packing pressure is set to 50–70 MPa to control sink at the ribs and bosses; with a 4.0 mm wall, the measured effective holding time was increased from 10 s to 18 s before the gate froze, eliminating vacuum voids near the mounting feet. Production scheduling avoids melt residence time above 5 min; a stoppage longer than 10 min triggers barrel purge with a polyester-compatible purge grade to prevent black speck formation in the next moulding campaign. The compound is introduced as a 100% ready-to-mould pellet feed. Sprues and runners are recovered only from the same black 7736 material and are limited to 20 wt% for internal brackets and 10 wt% for weather-exposed external surfaces because repeated heat histories reduce the ASA-phase rubber particles and cause surface chalking under UL 746C f1 xenon-arc exposure. Terminal products include inverter front covers, combiner box bases, cable entry bushings, disconnect switch covers, mounting rail end caps, and termination compartment shields.

Power Tool Motor Housings Exposed to Cutting Fluid, Brake Cleaner, and Drop Impact

Angle grinder motor clamshells, drill motor housings, and gear case covers moulded from the 20 wt% glass-reinforced PBT/ASA compound are selected for their balance of stiffness, chemical resistance, and low creep under screw torque. The PBT phase provides resistance to ethyl acetate, brake cleaner, and cutting-oil residues that can cause environmental stress cracking in amorphous materials; the ASA phase contributes impact strength retention in subzero temperatures. Compliance for handheld tools references mechanical safety under EN 62841-1, impact characterisation according to ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy at -30 °C, environmental stress-cracking resistance according to ISO 22088-3 with 50 mm × 20 mm × 4 mm test bars, tensile modulus according to ISO 527-2, and glass content by ignition-loss per ISO 3451-1. On an electric 1,300 kN injection moulding machine, the screw and barrel are specified with a bimetallic lining because 20 wt% chopped glass fibres accelerate screw flight wear and increase tip clearances after roughly 8,000–12,000 h of running time; the measured shot-to-shot variation in packing pressure remains within ±3 MPa when a wear-resistant check ring is used.

The resin feed is 100% as-supplied black 7736; clean post-industrial regrind from the same grade is limited to 15 wt% to preserve low-temperature impact in the motor housing. Higher regrind loadings shorten the fibre length distribution, and because the material is evaluated at the minimum wall thickness of 2.0 mm around the gear case, notched Charpy at -30 °C falls below the internal acceptance criterion before the part reaches the drop test. Polyamide regrind and amine-containing release agents are excluded because they destabilise the PBT phase and produce surface frosting at the ejector pin locations. The melt is maintained at 260–275 °C at the nozzle, the mould temperature is held at 80–100 °C to obtain sufficient PBT crystallinity and reduce post-mould warpage, and the injection velocity is set to at least 250 mm/s for thin gas-blower baffle rings. Packing pressure is kept at 70–90 MPa for 6–10 s, depending on the gate freeze time at the boss. Terminal components include angle grinder motor clamshells, drill motor housings, gear case covers, blower baffle rings, auxiliary handle brackets, and vibration-isolating motor frames.

Where condensate pump collector housings, float switch mounting plates, and fan shroud end caps operate in 80–95 °C water/glycol condensation, the Precite® V PBT+ASA GF 20 black (7736) compound is applied because the glass-reinforced PBT matrix withstands chronic moisture contact and mechanical loads from fan vibration without the creep deformation observed in unfilled blends. Compliance under appliance safety references IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2 for resistance to heat and fire, IEC 60695-2-11 for glow-wire testing where the final product standard requires a 650 °C or 750 °C glow-wire temperature, ISO 62 for water absorption, and ISO 527-2 for tensile modulus after 1,000 h humid ageing. Pre-drying is performed in a desiccant dryer at -40 °C dew point and 80 °C for 4–6 h to maintain moisture below 0.02%; if the material is left in an open hopper at relative humidity above 60%, reabsorption prior to the barrel must not exceed 0.02% because PBT hydrolyzes at processing temperatures and produces lower molecular weight, reducing fatigue life at the pump volute ribs.

For wet-contact condenser-side parts, regrind is limited to 10 wt%; dry bracketry and non-pressurised fan shroud components may accept up to 20 wt% clean in-house regrind from the same black 7736 grade. The 20 wt% glass content is fixed in the pellet and no dilution with unreinforced PBT/ASA is recommended for load-bearing pump housings because resulting tensile modulus and creep rupture resistance fall below the structural design values. On a two-cavity tool with hardened ejector sleeves, the melt is held at 250–265 °C, the mould at 90–100 °C, and the packing pressure at 55–70 MPa for 2.5 mm nominal wall. Batch-to-batch fibre content variation of ±2 wt% can move mould shrinkage enough to alter snap-fit insertion force at float switch mounting features; cavities are therefore cut after measuring the lot density according to ISO 1183 on a dry pellet sample. Terminal components include condensate pump collector housings, float switch mounting plates, fan shroud end caps, louver gear frames, air guide vanes, and drain pan support brackets.

When Dishwasher Spray Arms Are Moulded with Glass-Reinforced PBT/ASA for Hub Stiffness and Detergent Stress-Crack Resistance

Dishwasher spray arms, hub caps, and filter support rings moulded from the Precite® V PBT+ASA GF 20 black (7736) compound are subjected to intermittent hot water spray, alkaline detergent solutions, and mechanical pressure from the rotating arm bearings. The 20 wt% glass reinforcement maintains hub stiffness against jet-induced bending, and the ASA phase contributes to dimensional stability across temperature cycles. Compliance for the final part references IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2 for abnormal heat, EN 60456 for functional cleanability in household dishwashers, and NSF/ANSI 51 only when the specific surface is classified as a food zone; for black utility spray arms positioned beneath the basket, the part is generally evaluated as a non-food-contact functional component. A pre-production validation on a 4+4 stack tool found that the hub weld line produced a fracture under 0.2–0.4 MPa water-jet impingement when a single end gate was used; switching to a sequential valve-gated hub fill with two diametrically opposed gates moved the weld line radially outward and eliminated the hub crack after 5,000 cycles.

Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer keeps residual moisture below 0.02% before the stack tool is used. The compound is metered at 100% as-supplied pellet feed. Clean regrind from the same black grade is limited to 15 wt% because the glass fibre length distribution shifts lower after two heat histories, and spray arm fatigue under alternating water pressure is sensitive to fibre length. The melt temperature is set at 255–270 °C, the mould at 90 °C, and the injection speed is held high enough to fill 2.0–2.8 mm walls before the PBT crystallises at the outer surface. Tool steel for the rotating hub splits and end cap threads is hardened to HRC 52–54 to resist glass-fibre abrasion, and the cycle time for a 2.2 mm nominal wall is 35–45 s, limited by the time required to reach stable ejection temperature rather than by gate freezing. Terminal components include spray arms, hub caps, filter support rings, lower rack slide rails, detergent dispenser adapters, and upper spray arm support yokes.

Outdoor Telecommunication Enclosure Covers and Cable Entry Glands Require Hydrolytically Stable Glass Reinforcements

In outdoor cabinet covers, cable entry gland flanges, and pole-mount bracket covers, the Precite® V PBT+ASA GF 20 black (7736) compound is used where cyclic humidity, salt mist, and direct sunlight act on the sealing surface while the gasket interface must retain clamping force. The glass-fibre reinforcement controls creep under constant seal compression, and the ASA domain reduces ultraviolet surface oxidation that leads to chalking and gloss loss. Compliance references IEC 60068-2-30 for damp heat, IEC 60068-2-52 for cyclic salt mist, IEC 60529 for IP66 enclosure sealing, UL 746C f1 for outdoor weathering, and IEC 60112 for tracking resistance on terminal blocks inside non-current-carrying sections. The grade is not a radio-transparent material because carbon black is present; the black 7736 designation should not be used for radome or antenna-transparent windows unless the entire radio-frequency design is validated at the specific frequency range and wall thickness. No additional carbon black masterbatch is added, and the resin feed is 100% compound. Clean regrind is limited to 10 wt% for external exposed surfaces because repeated processing raises the surface oxidation index and can reduce the UL 746C f1 retention of tensile impact after 1,000 h xenon arc.

For cover moulding on a 2,000 kN hydraulic machine with 3.0–4.0 mm walls, the screw speed is reduced to protect glass fibre length, and the back pressure is held at 0.3–0.5 MPa to avoid over-dispersing the fibres into shorter fragments that lower flexural modulus. The melt is held at 250–265 °C, the mould at 80–100 °C, and the packing pressure at 50–70 MPa. Because the gasket channel must remain flat within 0.8 mm across a 500 mm sealing span, gate placement is simulated with mould-filling software and the tool is adjusted after measuring anisotropic shrinkage on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques per ISO 294-4. Terminal components include outdoor cabinet covers, cable entry gland flanges, pole-mount bracket covers, antenna alignment brackets, non-radio-transparent mounting bases, and sealing bezel rings.
