    Application of 3H Vinacom PE-Xb HA-5010

In potable-water distribution pipe production, 3H Vinacom PE-Xb HA-5010 is specified as the base compound for extruded PEX-b tubing where the target hydrostatic design basis is 6.0 MPa at 20 °C under ISO 15875-2:2003. The formulation ratio for non-black potable tube is 100 parts by weight HA-5010, with colour masterbatch metered at 1.0–2.0 wt% only where coloured SDR9 tubes are ordered; regrind of uncrosslinked edge trims is limited to 10 wt% of total feed to prevent gel content falling below 65% as measured by ASTM D2765-16. Downstream processing uses a single-screw extruder with grooved-barrel intake and L/D 24:1–30:1, barrel temperatures from 170 °C to 205 °C, and a spider pipe die sized for outside diameters of 16 mm to 32 mm at SDR9 wall thickness. The extruded coil is cured in a hot-water bath or steam cabinet at 70–85 °C and ≥90% RH until the silane crosslinking reaction reaches the specified degree, then subjected to hydrostatic validation according to ISO 15875-2:2003; potable contact compliance is assessed under NSF/ANSI 61, and chlorine resistance under ASTM F2023-17. Terminal product types are residential and light-commercial hot- and cold-water distribution pipes, including manifold-to-fixture loops and riser tubes, but HA-5010 is not assigned for continuous service above 95 °C without manufacturer derating.

How Does Oxygen Barrier Layer Geometry Shift HA-5010 Consumption in Floor Heating Pipe?

Radiant floor heating loops with steel manifolds use a three-layer oxygen barrier pipe. The relevant compliance condition is DIN 4726:2017, which limits oxygen diffusion through the pipe wall; unbarrier PE-Xb is only acceptable where non-corrosive polymer manifolds are specified. In coextrusion, HA-5010 forms the inner and outer pipe layers at 86–92 wt% of total pipe mass, while an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer with 32–38 mol% ethylene content is placed at 0.10–0.15 mm layer thickness; maleic-anhydride-grafted polyethylene adhesive at 0.05–0.08 mm on each interface completes the structure at a total wall thickness of 2.0 mm for 16 mm outside diameter. Downstream, a three-channel coextrusion head is fed by separate extruders; HA-5010 melt temperature is maintained at 190–210 °C, the EVOH melt at 200–220 °C, and barrier-layer residence time is capped at 10 min to suppress degradation. The uncured pipe is coiled and moisture-cured at 75–85 °C for 4–8 h, then checked for gel content by ASTM D2765-16 and for oxygen diffusion according to ISO 17455:2005. Terminal products are 12–20 mm PE-Xb barrier pipe coils for underfloor hydronic circuits classified under ISO 15875-2:2003 service classes 4 and 5, but the presence of the EVOH layer raises bending stiffness compared with monolayer HA-5010 tube, so bending radii must be adjusted during installation.

In hydronic heating and chilled-water distribution, HA-5010 is extruded in larger diameters from 25 mm to 63 mm outside diameter for flow and return mains between heat pumps, buffer tanks, and fan-coil terminals. The compound is fed at 100 parts by weight; carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt% is introduced where outdoor runs require ultraviolet stabilisation. Compliance for pressure-bearing pipe remains within ISO 15875-2:2003; system design follows ISO 15875-5:2003 for fitness for purpose, with hydrostatic strength regression data developed according to ISO 9080:2012. Processing is performed on a chilled-water single-screw extruder with vacuum sizing and a haul-off torque monitor because wall-thickness variation above ±0.15 mm can affect annular collapse resistance at 0.4 MPa partial-vacuum chilled-water operation. Post-extrusion moisture curing is carried out for 6–10 h at 80 °C and 95% RH; the cured pipe is pressure-tested at 1.5 times service pressure. Terminal product types include hydronic distribution mains, riser pipes, and branch lines for fan-coil and radiator connections, with the limitation that glycol concentrations above 40% require a reduced design stress by manufacturer data because of changes in hoop-stress capacity at low temperatures.

If Class 5 Hot-Water Service Is Specified, PE-Xb HA-5010 Requires Batch-Specific Cure Control

Class 5 service exposure at 90 °C with excursions to 95 °C is the most severe condition for silane-cured PE-Xb in building services. Data from ISO 9080:2012 hydrostatic regression and ASTM F2023-17 oxidative resistance testing define the operational boundary; published data for this specific grade under continuous 95 °C chlorinated water is limited, so qualification for class 5 systems must be made on a batch-specific basis. In formulation terms, HA-5010 is used at 100 parts by weight without additional antioxidant masterbatch unless the pipe is intended for return-line service in district heating; when added, hindered phenol/phosphate stabiliser masterbatch is dosed at 0.5–1.0 wt% and must not exceed 1.0 wt%, because antioxidant bloom can impair surface condition and fitting grip. Downstream process conditions include melt-filtrated extrusion through 200–250 µm screen packs to remove agglomerates that might initiate premature thermo-oxidative failure. The pipe is cured to a gel content of 70–75% rather than the minimal 65%, using a two-stage cycle: 80 °C for 4 h followed by 90 °C for 2 h. Terminal products are radiator connection pipes, flow/return risers, and heat pump distribution lines; because of the narrow processing window at high gel content, screw back-pressure and melt temperature must be recorded per batch to avoid variability above ±3% in ultimate elongation after curing.

Industrial process-water transfer using PE-Xb HA-5010 is confined to dilute aqueous streams where a chemical resistance pre-test has been run according to ASTM D543-21; no prescriptive global standard substitutes for end-user compatibility confirmation. The compound is used at 100 parts by weight as virgin pellet, with no plasticizer, no filler, and no thermal-fusion joining; downstream, 20 mm to 50 mm tube is extruded and moisture-cured at the same conditions as potable pipe, then joined by mechanical compression fittings or cold-expansion sleeves because silane crosslinking prevents butt-fusion welding. Terminal product types are process water lines, cooling water returns, and dilute glycol loops in food-processing and pharmaceutical utility areas, excluding strong oxidizers, ketones, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Snow-Melting Circuit Behaviour at Low Ambient Start-Up

Snow-melting slab loops operate at sub-0 °C start-up conditions while the heat source delivers fluid at 30–50 °C; freeze resistance is provided by the system, not the PE-Xb pipe itself. HA-5010 is configured at 100 parts by weight with carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt% for outdoor UV exposure. The governing standard is ISO 15875-2:2003 service class 4, with bending radius according to manufacturer values; the pipe is produced in diameters 16–25 mm at SDR9 wall thickness. Downstream processing includes online diameter control with an ultrasonic wall-thickness gauge and a post-cure oven at 80 °C for 4 h. Terminal products are embedded hydronic snow-melting loops in ramps, sidewalks, and loading docks; HA-5010 is not rated for direct electrical trace heating or for constant exposure to sodium chloride slurry above 60 °C.
