    Packing & Storage
Packing One 1 kg spool of 3DXTECH ASA filament, vacuum-sealed in a moisture-barrier bag with desiccant and packed in a labeled cardboard box.
Container Loading (20′ FCL) 3DXTECH ASA 3D printing filament, palletized in cartons, loaded into a 20-foot FCL container and secured for shipment.
Shipping 3DXTECH ASA ships as a non-hazardous, non-DG plastic filament. Spools are sealed in moisture-barrier bags with desiccant and boxed for protection. No special transport labels are required; use standard ground/air shipping and store dry, away from heat and UV.
Storage Store 3DXTECH ASA filament in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, sparks, flames, and strong oxidizers. Keep it sealed in original packaging or an airtight container with desiccant to limit moisture absorption. Protect from physical damage and UV exposure; rotate stock and use oldest first. Store separately from incompatible acids and bases.
Shelf Life The shelf life is 12 months when stored in a cool, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
    Application of 3DXTECH ASA

At installations above 1,800 m, outdoor telecommunication enclosures exposed to high UV-B and rapid temperature cycling require a styrenic material without a butadiene rubber phase. 3DXTECH ASA replaces the butadiene impact modifier with an acrylate elastomer, which shifts the primary degradation route from oxidative embrittlement of polybutadiene to ester hydrolysis at elevated pH. For 5G small-cell shrouds, trackside signal repeater housings, and remote telemetry boxes, FDM parts are produced with a 0.4 mm brass or hardened steel nozzle at 250–260°C, a bed temperature of 100–110°C, and a passively heated chamber at 35–45°C. The layer height is held between 0.16 mm and 0.20 mm, and the line width is set at 0.48 mm, giving a width-to-nozzle diameter ratio of 1.2:1. Four perimeter walls are used with gyroid infill at 35–45% density. Part cooling is disabled for the first 3 layers and capped at 30% thereafter to prevent edge lift. After printing, acetone vapour smoothing is applied for 10–15 s at 45°C to close surface striations to below 5 µm. The terminal parts have a mass of 0.8–1.4 kg and replace cast aluminium rooftop shrouds. Weathering validation is performed under ISO 4892-2 Cycle 1 for 1,000 h, with colour change assessed against ISO 105-A02; a grey scale rating of 4 or lower is required. Ingress protection is verified under IEC 60529 IP65 after a silicone gasket is installed in a channel printed with a 2:1 gasket channel depth-to-width ratio. REACH compliance is maintained because the acrylate elastomer does not release free butadiene. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, filament must be dried at 80°C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer to keep moisture below 0.02%. The main production bottleneck is sealing tall enclosure corners; a minimum wall thickness of 1.2 mm is specified because thinner sections show leakage at IP65 after acetone smoothing.

Is a 0.5 mm ASA cap layer sufficient for south-facing PVC window profiles after 3,000 h of xenon arc?

South-facing PVC window profiles require a coextruded ASA cap layer to protect the PVC substrate from chalking and impact loss. Field experience on production lines indicates that capstock thickness below 0.4 mm creates pinholing at welded corners and coextruded glazing bead radii. The specification therefore holds the cap layer at 0.4–0.6 mm, with 0.5 mm as the nominal value, over a PVC substrate wall of 2.5 mm. The ASA capstock compound is dried to below 0.02% moisture and extruded through a single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and L/D 30:1 at a melt temperature of 210–230°C at the die. PVC is processed separately at 180–195°C. The two melt streams are combined in a coextrusion feedblock; the capstock extruder contributes 20–25% of total output by volume. Take-off speed is set between 1.8 m/min and 2.5 m/min. Calibration is performed in an internal vacuum tank, not by air knife, because air calibration thins the cap layer at sharp corners below 0.3 mm. Weathering validation uses ISO 4892-2 Cycle 1 for 3,000 h, with black panel temperature 65°C and a spray cycle. Colour change is assessed by ISO 105-A02, with acceptance at grey scale 4 or lower. Impact retention for the complete profile is tested under EN 12608-1 after weathering; the cap layer itself is evaluated for cracking and delamination at 10× magnification. Terminal products are external window and door profiles, garage door frames, and residential shutter slats. The boundary condition is that RAL-GZ 716/1 certification applies to the complete profile and not to the ASA capstock alone. Published data for 3DXTECH ASA melt behaviour in coextrusion tooling is limited; capillary rheometry on production-grade ASA was used to approximate die shear rates of 100–500 s⁻¹.

Under marine instrument deck exposure, spray containing 5 wt% NaCl penetrates FDM layer boundaries in ASA faster than in moulded ABS/PC. For GPS chartplotter bezels, VHF radio faceplates, and below-deck transducer brackets, 3DXTECH ASA is printed at a nozzle temperature of 255°C and a bed temperature of 105°C. The build chamber is held at 35–45°C. Parts are designed with an outer wall thickness of 1.5 mm, a top and bottom skin thickness of 1.2 mm, and 5 top and 5 bottom solid layers. Infill is 100% rectilinear where stainless steel M4 heat-set inserts are installed; the boss outer diameter is maintained at 2.2 times the insert outer diameter to prevent post-installation cracking. Printer line width is 0.48 mm for a 0.4 mm nozzle, with line spacing set at 0.46 mm, producing an overlap between adjacent roads of 0.02 mm. Salt fog exposure follows ISO 9227 NSS for 720 h at 35°C; acceptance requires no blistering greater than 0.5 mm on visible surfaces. UV exposure follows ASTM D4329 Cycle A for 2,000 h. Terminal parts include helm chartplotter bezels, radar fairings, and transducer mounting flanges, each replacing glass-filled nylon or PC/ABS in low-volume service. The material is not specified for continuous immersion below the waterline; acetal or fibre-reinforced PP is used for wet sliding surfaces. Print orientation places the longest raster runs parallel to wave-slam loads rather than normal to the layer plane. The most common failure mode observed before optimisation was circumferential cracking at heat-set insert bosses when the boss-to-insert diameter ratio fell below 2:1.

Notched Izod retention in printed automotive mirror brackets depends on raster angle more than build orientation.

Automotive exterior mirror brackets printed from 3DXTECH ASA were evaluated for low-speed impact behaviour at −20°C. Notched Izod specimens machined from printed plaques show a 12–18% reduction in impact strength when all raster lines are oriented parallel to the notch root, compared with alternating 0°/90° raster layers. The result indicates that interlayer crack propagation controls failure before bulk resin ductility is exhausted. For mirror arm brackets, the print strategy alternates 0° and 90° raster angles on successive layers. Layer height is set at 0.15 mm and line width at 0.45 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle, giving a layer height-to-nozzle diameter ratio of 0.375:1. Nozzle temperature is 255°C, bed temperature 105°C, and chamber temperature 35°C. A heated enclosure is used to slow free-surface cooling below the glass transition. Mechanical tests follow ASTM D638-14 for tensile and ASTM D256-10 for Izod impact. Exterior weathering is performed under SAE J2527 for 1,000 kJ/m²; notched Izod retention must remain above 80% of the as-printed mean value. The terminal product is a left-hand and right-hand mirror arm bracket for a utility vehicle service part. Warping at the base is controlled with a 3 mm brim; the brim-to-part contact surface ratio is 1:0.4 at the footprint edge. Threaded inserts are installed with a 2.5:1 boss outer diameter-to-insert diameter ratio to reduce radial stress. Published data for long-term fastener creep of printed ASA at 80°C is limited, so metal brackets are retained for engine bay–adjacent mounting points.

Electrical disconnect enclosureUL 746C F11,000 h xenon arc and 7 d water immersion at 70°Cno cracking or dielectric loss

Outdoor electrical enclosures for solar combiner boxes and disconnect switches are injection-moulded from ASA when polycarbonate loses impact after UV exposure. The resin is dried to below 0.02% moisture and processed at a melt temperature of 240–260°C, a mould temperature of 60–80°C, and an injection speed of 60–120 mm/s. Regrind is added at a 20:80 regrind-to-virgin ratio by weight only after melt flow rate drift is confirmed below 10% per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C / 10 kg. Injection moulding grades typically show an MFR of 8–20 g/10 min; filament-grade ASA is lower MFR and is not normally used for thin-wall injection tooling. The terminal product is an UL-listed outdoor disconnect switch enclosure with a nominal wall thickness of 2.5–3.0 mm. Flammability is tested under UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm. Outdoor suitability is established under UL 746C F1, including 1,000 h xenon arc and 7 d water immersion at 70°C. The main injection moulding defect is jetting at gates thinner than 1.0 mm; gate land length is held at 0.5–1.0 mm. Wall thickness-to-rib thickness is set at 1:0.6 to avoid sink marks. Polycarbonate contamination above 2 wt% must be purged before transition because incompatible PC domains cause delamination and loss of UL 94 consistency. REACH and RoHS 2011/65/EU verification is required at batch level for flame-retardant-free formulations.

When 254 nm UV-C disinfection cycles interact with printed ASA drone battery housings

Agricultural UAV battery housings are exposed to repeated 254 nm UV-C disinfection cycles between crop site rotations. Each cycle applies a dose of 200–400 mJ/cm² for 12 min at ambient temperature. The terminal product is a battery housing shell with a wall thickness of 0.9 mm, internal rib thickness of 1.0 mm, and a mass of 180–250 g. The rib-to-wall thickness ratio is 1.1:1, which avoids sink marks while maintaining compression stiffness around the battery cell. 3DXTECH ASA is printed with a 0.25 mm layer height, a nozzle temperature of 255°C, and a bed temperature of 100°C. Part cooling fan speed is set to 50% after layer 5. Electrical clearance follows IEC 62368-1 for 48 V battery circuits; the material itself is not certified to ISO 10993. Published data for 254 nm UV-C ageing of ASA is limited, and xenon arc testing per ISO 4892-2 cannot be treated as equivalent. The housing is therefore limited to 500 cumulative UV-C cycles before inspection for microcracking at 10× magnification. Gamma sterilisation above 25 kGy is outside the material boundary. The most common failure mode before validation was rib root cracking at the battery strap anchor, corrected by raising the rib-to-wall ratio from 0.8:1 to 1.1:1.

Acetone vapour smoothing and the solvent welding boundary in ASA signage components

Channel-letter backs, backlit sign returns, and facility wall plaques made from 3DXTECH ASA are solvent-smoothed to close surface striations before UV-cure clear coating. The smoothing cycle uses acetone vapour at 45°C for 8–15 s, followed by forced air drying at 50°C for 30 min. Stylus profilometry shows reduction in surface roughness from 18–25 µm Ra to below 5 µm Ra after a single cycle. Thin walls below 0.8 mm can warp after smoothing because residual solvent plasticises the shell. The wall-to-closed-infill ratio is set at 1:0.5; for a 2.0 mm wall, the closed-cell internal layer is 0.5 mm thick and each outer shell is 0.75 mm. UV stability is tested under ASTM D4329 Cycle B for 1,500 h, with colour drift ΔE below 2.5 for black and white parts. The terminal products are dimensional sign letters, backlit channel letter returns, and decorative wall plaques. Continuous outdoor service above 70°C is avoided because solvent traces can linger in thick sections if baking is shorter than 60 min at 60°C. Flammability is evaluated under UL 94 HB on the flat plaque geometry; thin sign returns below 0.7 mm may not meet the thickness criterion of the 1.5 mm standard specimen. The main production constraint is solvent carryover between batches; identical smoothing time must be set for left-hand and right-hand returns to maintain dimensional symmetry.
